Your New Betta: A Take-Home Care Guide
Just brought home a betta? Here's everything you need for a healthy first week. Tank setup, water care, feeding, and what to watch for. The honest, no-fluff version from your local family-run aquatics shop.
Behind the Scenes: Our Fish Quarantine Room
Our Quarantine Room Is Now Open to the Public
If you've ever bought a fish that looked perfectly healthy at the store, brought it home, and then watched it (or worse, your whole tank) crash a week later, you already know why quarantine matters.
It's the unglamorous, behind-the-scenes work that decides whether your new fish thrives or becomes a very expensive lesson. At Squeaky's Aquatics, quarantine isn't an afterthought. It's the whole foundation. And starting now, we're inviting you back to see it for yourself.
Why We Quarantine Fish Before They Hit the Floor
Wholesale fish come from all over the world. They get bagged, shipped, transferred, and stressed long before they ever see a store tank. Even the healthiest-looking fish can carry parasites, bacterial infections, or velvet that won't show symptoms for days, sometimes weeks.
Quarantine isn't standard in the industry, and we get why. It costs money, takes time, requires daily effort, and the customer never sees it. The easier path, and the more common one, is to receive fish from the wholesaler and put them straight on the floor. That's not what we do here.
What Actually Happens Back There
Our quarantine room runs multiple fully separated systems, so a tank with a known issue can't share water with the rest. Each system has its own filtration, heaters, and monitoring schedule. Here's the short version of what we do:
- Observation. We watch every fish for behavior, appetite, breathing, and any signs of disease.
- Regular testing. Water parameters get logged, not guessed at.
- Preventative and targeted treatment. Every tank gets pre-treated for the most common threats like ich, symptoms or not. From there, treatment gets adjusted by species, risk level, and what we're actually seeing. There's no one-size-fits-all protocol because that never catches everything.
- Flexible release. No fixed release date. Time in QT depends on the species, the risk, and the health of each fish. If one fish in a tank is sick, the whole tank stays locked down until it's clear.
It's a lot of tanks. It's a lot of testing. It's a lot of mornings starting with a clipboard and a TDS meter. We're not going to pretend every fish gets the exact same textbook timeline. Some species need more time, some need less, and we adjust based on what we're actually seeing in the tank. The standard is consistent: nothing leaves the QT room if it raises a red flag.
One Honest Note: Please QT at Home Too
No store, anywhere, can guarantee a fish is 100% disease-free. We do everything we reasonably can on our end, but the safest thing you can do for your tank at home is run your own quarantine before adding new fish to your display.
Even a simple QT setup at home, a bare tank with a sponge filter and a heater, can save you from a tank-wide wipeout. We'd rather tell you that honestly than oversell what any store's QT process can promise.
It's Not Just Fish
Corals get the same careful treatment. When new corals come in, they're held first to rest and reset from shipping stress, then dipped to clear any hitchhikers, pests, or unwanted hangers-on before they ever touch our display systems. By the time a coral makes it to the sales tanks, it's had a chance to recover and been checked over for the things you don't want catching a ride into your reef.
Why We're Opening It Up
Opening up the QT room was always the plan. From day one, we wanted customers to be able to see the work, not just take our word for it. But getting there took longer than we hoped. Between the daily workload, limited storage, and a hundred other moving pieces of opening a store, the QT room stayed staff-only longer than we wanted.
We've worked through most of those hurdles now (though honestly, we could still use more space, that one's not going anywhere). So we're finally doing what we always said we would, and we'll keep improving it as we go.
You're now welcome to walk through the QT room when you visit. Ask questions. See the systems. Watch us test. Look at the logs. If you've ever wondered what "properly quarantined" actually looks like, this is your chance to see it in person.
Coming Soon to the QT Room
We're not stopping here. Here's what's already in motion behind the scenes:
In-Depth Microscopy Station
A dedicated microscope setup so we can ID parasites, gill flukes, and skin issues on the spot. Faster diagnosis, better treatment, fewer guesses. We'll even show you what we find.
Quarantine Room Improvements
Upgraded lighting, system improvements, and clearer per-tank labeling so you can read the QT status at a glance when you walk through.
Hobbyist Disease & QT Classes
Free in-store classes covering the most common fish diseases, how to spot them early, and how to set up a simple home quarantine. Whether you're brand new or a long-time hobbyist, we want to help you build healthier tanks at home.
Dates are our best estimates. Fish keepers know how plans go. We'll announce real dates as we lock them in.
Trust the Process
We're a small, family-run business. We don't have the volume of the big chains. What we do have is the standards to do this the right way, and the willingness to let you look behind the curtain while we do.
Come see the difference. Ask the awkward questions. Watch us work. We think once you see what goes into a healthy fish, you'll be a lot more comfortable with where you're buying them.
Stay in the Loop
Follow us on Facebook or check back here on the blog to be the first to know when the microscopy station goes live, when classes are scheduled, and what's next.
