Setup and Care

Hang the filter on the back rim, fill the chamber to prime it, and plug it in. Water is drawn up through the intake, passes through the sponge and media stages, and returns over the spillway. On a new tank, seed the filter with a bacteria starter such as Seachem Stability to speed up cycling. Rinse the media in old tank water during water changes, and swap it out as it wears down.

Which Size Is Right for You?

Match the filter to your tank size, and step up a model if you keep messy or heavily stocked fish. The larger PFE-6 and PFE-9 add a surface skimmer that pulls the oily film off the top of the water, which is especially handy on planted and reef tanks.

Does it work on both freshwater and saltwater? Yes. Every size runs on freshwater, planted, and marine tanks.

How often should I change the media? Rinse it in old tank water at each water change, and replace the cartridge every three to four weeks, or sooner if flow drops.
