Why zinc matters
- Enzyme cofactor: Zinc is a cofactor for more than 300 enzymes.
- Photosynthesis: Plays a key role in carbon dioxide transport and fixation; a deficiency can reduce zooxanthellae photosynthesis and coral energy.
- Coral color: Needed for full color in SPS corals; a deficiency often mutes pigments.
- Fish health: Important for immune function and tissue regeneration in fish; low levels can slow wound healing and raise infection risk.
Common causes of a deficiency (per ATI): high demand during strong stony coral growth, low levels in salt mixes, or no targeted trace-element dosing.
