Hikari Texas Holey Rock Resin Ornament | Cichlid Cave & Aquascape Centerpiece
The Hikari Texas Holey Rock is the iconic African Cichlid scaping piece — recreated in lightweight, authentic-looking resin so you get the real Lake Malawi/Tanganyika look without quarrying a hundred-pound chunk of actual limestone. The natural caves and tunnels give cichlids the territories they need to thrive, while the porous look reads as the real thing from across the room. Available in three sizes to fit nano through XL tanks. Browse our full freshwater decor or shop all freshwater supplies.
What It's For
Texas Holey Rock is the gold-standard aquascape for African Cichlids — Mbuna, Peacocks, and Haps that need cave territories to claim and defend. The holes and tunnels also work great for plecos, loaches, dwarf cichlids, bettas, shrimp colonies, and saltwater fish looking for cover. Stack two or three pieces to build a full rockscape, or anchor a corner of the tank with a single Large.

Which Size Is Right for You?
Small — Pick this for nano tanks (10–20 gal) where you need a single focal piece, or as a stacking element in a bigger rockscape.
Medium — The most versatile size. Works as a standalone centerpiece in a 40-breeder or 55, or pairs with another Medium/Large for a fuller look.
Large — For 75-gallon and bigger displays where the rock needs to read from across the room. Build a full Mbuna fortress with one Large and one or two Mediums.
Setup Tips
Rinse the piece under tap water before adding it to the tank to clear any manufacturing dust. Place directly on the glass bottom or on a layer of substrate — the resin is light enough to skip the foam pad most heavy rocks require. Position it so the cave openings face away from the front glass so cichlids can claim territory without constantly seeing you. For stacking, dry-fit on the carpet first, then transfer the arrangement into the tank.
FAQ
Is this real limestone or resin?
Resin. It's a hand-painted cast that mimics real Texas Holey Rock down to the texture and color, but at a fraction of the weight — and without raising your pH like real limestone would.
Will it raise my pH?
No. Unlike real limestone, the inert resin will not buffer your water. If you're keeping African cichlids and want elevated pH/hardness, use a dedicated cichlid salt or crushed coral substrate.
Reef-safe?
Yes — safe for freshwater, brackish, and saltwater including reef tanks. Won't leach anything into the water.
How do I clean it?
Rinse in tank water and scrub with a soft brush during water changes. Don't use soap or bleach.
