Product description

Dial in your reef with confidence. The Squeaky's Aquatics Saltwater Refractometer gives you a fast, accurate reading of your aquarium's salinity and specific gravity, the single most important parameter for a healthy marine or reef tank. It reads far more accurately than a plastic swing-arm hydrometer and arrives ready to use with everything you need. Pair it with our reef salt mixes and test kits.

Features

  • Dual scale reads both salinity (0 to 100 ppt) and specific gravity (1.000 to 1.070)
  • Automatic Temperature Compensation (ATC) for reliable readings at room temperature
  • Hand-held optical design, just add a few drops of water and look through the eyepiece
  • Adjustable focus and a calibration screw for easy zeroing
  • Far more accurate and repeatable than plastic swing-arm hydrometers
  • Includes the refractometer, calibration screwdriver, pipette, and a protective hard case

How To Use

Calibrate first: place a few drops of RO/DI or pure water on the prism, close the daylight plate, and turn the calibration screw until the boundary line sits on zero. Wipe dry, then add a few drops of tank water, close the plate, and hold the eyepiece toward a light source. Read where the blue and white boundary crosses the salinity or specific gravity scale. Rinse and dry the prism after each use.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why use a refractometer instead of a hydrometer?
A refractometer measures the actual refraction of light through your water, so it is far more accurate and consistent than a floating or swing-arm hydrometer, which can drift with bubbles and buildup.

Do I need to calibrate it?
Yes. Calibrate to zero with RO/DI or pure water before use, and re-check periodically. Calibration fluid can be used for the most precise results.

Does the ATC matter?
Yes. Automatic Temperature Compensation adjusts the reading for normal room-temperature swings so your salinity number stays reliable.

Is it for saltwater only?
It is designed for measuring marine salinity and specific gravity, making it ideal for saltwater and reef aquariums.
