Striped Wizard Snail (Filopaludina sumatrensis)
The Striped Wizard Snail (Filopaludina sumatrensis) is a live-bearing freshwater trapdoor snail with a glossy golden shell wrapped in dark spiral racing stripes. Like its cousin the White Wizard Snail, it is a tireless, completely plant-safe tank janitor that cruises the glass and substrate eating algae, biofilm, and leftover food. Browse the rest of our freshwater invertebrates to build out your cleanup crew.
Please note: the photo shows a group and pricing is per snail. Stripe pattern and shell shade vary a little from snail to snail.
Care Guide
Wizard snails are about as easy as aquarium animals get. Give them stable, hard water so their shells stay strong, and they will handle the rest, grazing all day and even filter feeding particles straight out of the water column, a trick most aquarium snails cannot do. They appreciate a sand or fine gravel substrate to push through. If your tank is very clean, supplement with a sinking wafer or a slice of blanched zucchini a couple of times a week.
Important: never dose copper-based medications in a tank with snails or other invertebrates. Copper is lethal to them even at low levels.

FAQ
Will it eat my plants? No. Wizard snails graze algae and biofilm off leaves without damaging them.
Will they overrun my tank? No. They are livebearers that produce a single baby at a time, so numbers grow very slowly, nothing like pest snails.
Why is my snail not moving? Trapdoor snails seal their operculum and rest, sometimes for a day or two. Give it time before assuming anything is wrong.
What should I feed it? In an established tank they find most of their own food. Offer sinking wafers or blanched vegetables if the glass is spotless.
