Product description

In-store pickup only. These are live super worms. We keep them fresh in the shop and hand them to you at pickup, so they arrive lively and ready to feed.

Big, active, protein-packed live feeders. Super worms (Zophobas morio) are large, soft-bodied beetle larvae that most insect-eating reptiles, amphibians, birds, turtles, and large fish go crazy for. They are meatier and higher in fat than mealworms, which makes them a great growth food and an irresistible treat. Each cup is packed with lively, ready-to-feed worms.

Feeding a smaller eater or want variety in the rotation? Pair these with our live Meal Worms and browse the rest of our reptile & amphibian supplies.

What Eats Super Worms

Super worms are a favorite of larger insectivores, including:

  • Bearded dragons, tegus, monitors, and other larger lizards
  • Leopard geckos and skinks (as an occasional richer treat)
  • Box turtles, aquatic turtles, and large frogs and toads
  • Koi, large cichlids, and other big predatory fish
  • Chickens, wild birds, and other backyard poultry

Because they are higher in fat, super worms are best offered as part of a varied diet rather than the only food, especially for animals prone to weight gain.

Feeding Tips

  • Match the size to your pet. Offer prey no wider than the space between your reptile's eyes. Super worms are large, so they suit medium and larger animals.
  • Gut-load before feeding. Give the worms fresh vegetables and grain for a day or two so your pet gets the nutrients too.
  • Dust with a calcium or vitamin supplement as directed for your species to round out the meal.
  • Supervise with smaller pets. Super worms are strong and can nip, so feed by hand or with feeding tongs.

Keeping Them Alive

  • Do not refrigerate. Unlike mealworms, super worms are killed by the cold. Keep them at room temperature.
  • Store in a ventilated container with a shallow layer of wheat bran or oats as bedding.
  • Add a slice of carrot or potato for moisture and remove it before it molds.
  • Kept this way, a cup of super worms stays lively for weeks.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between super worms and mealworms?
Super worms are much larger, softer, and higher in fat, which makes them a great treat and growth food for bigger animals. Mealworms are smaller and firmer, easier for small pets, and can be refrigerated to store. Super worms should never be refrigerated.

Can I feed super worms as a staple?
For many larger insectivores, yes, as part of a varied diet. Because they are rich, balance them with leaner feeders, greens, and a good staple food, and dust with calcium as your species needs.

How do I keep them alive at home?
Keep them at room temperature in a ventilated tub with wheat bran or oats and a bit of carrot or potato for moisture. Do not put them in the fridge.

Are they safe for my pet to eat?
Yes, when sized correctly. Offer worms no wider than the space between your pet's eyes and supervise feeding, since super worms are active and can nip.
