Scrapers are built around algae and plant proteins, the natural diet of plecostomus, bristlenose, otocinclus, and other grazers. Corydoras, loaches, small catfish, freshwater shrimp, snails, and livebearer fry all feed on them readily, and the added cellulose supports the digestion of wood-eating pleco species.
