Adaptive Reef Copepod Habitat | Reef-Safe Shelter for Sump & Refugium
The Adaptive Reef Copepod Habitat gives copepods a protected place to live, breed, and multiply inside your reef system. The sturdy outer shell shields a dense internal grid from filtration flow and hungry fish, so your pod population can build up steadily and feed your tank from the inside out. Drop it in your sump or refugium, seed it once, and let it work. Browse our other saltwater reef supplies to round out your setup.
Why Reefers Love It
- Promotes a healthy copepod population — internal grid gives pods the surface area they need to settle and reproduce.
- Predator & flow protection — outer shell keeps display fish, wrasses, and mandarins from wiping out your pod farm before it establishes.
- Reef-safe materials — durable, non-toxic plastic that won't leach into your system.
- Stackable design — stack multiple habitats to scale pod production as your tank grows.
- Sump or refugium ready — sized to drop into virtually any filtration compartment.
How It Works
Place the habitat in a low-flow area of your sump or refugium — a chaeto chamber or dedicated pod fuge is ideal. Seed it with a bottle of live marine copepods by pouring directly over or next to the habitat. The pods crawl into the protected interior, settle on the grid, and begin breeding. Adult pods and nauplii (baby pods) escape into your display through normal water flow, providing constant live food for mandarins, anthias, dragonets, and corals.
For best results, dose live phytoplankton regularly to feed the pod colony. Stack two or three habitats together in larger systems for higher production.

FAQ
Do I need copepods already to use this?
No, but you'll get results faster if you seed it with a bottle of live pods at setup. Without seeding, pods can still find and colonize the habitat naturally over time if any pod population exists in your system.
Where should I put it in my sump?
A low-flow chamber — your refugium or a quiet return-pump section — works best. High flow defeats the purpose, since the goal is to give pods a sheltered place away from turbulence and predators.
Will my fish eat the pods through the habitat?
The shell blocks display fish from accessing the interior, so adult pods inside stay safe. Nauplii and escaping adults drift into your display and feed mandarins, dragonets, anthias, and corals on their way out.
Can I stack more than one?
Yes — the design is fully stackable. Larger systems or heavy pod-predator tanks (multiple mandarins, leopard wrasses) benefit from two or three units stacked together.
How long until I see a difference?
Most reefers notice visible pod growth on the glass and rockwork within 2–4 weeks of seeding, assuming regular phytoplankton dosing and low predation pressure.
