Product description

A hollow moss-look sphere with a cave mouth cut into it, mounted on a suction cup so it sticks anywhere on the glass. Fish, shrimp and fry use it to rest, hide and spawn in, and because it mounts rather than sits on the substrate you can put shelter at mid-water or up near the surface where there usually is none. Three sizes. Browse the rest of our decor and hardscape.

This is a moss-look ornament, not a live Marimo. Nothing to keep alive and nothing to trim.

Choose Your Size

Size L x W x H Suits
Small 2.6 x 2.3 x 2.6 in Shrimp, fry and nano tanks
Medium 3.4 x 3.2 x 3.4 in Small community fish, a shrimp colony
Large 5.1 x 4.7 x 5.1 in Bigger fish and breeding pairs

Features

  • Mounts on the glass. The included suction cup is the part that makes this different from every other cave. Shelter does not have to live on the substrate, and a hideout at mid-water suits species that never go to the bottom.
  • Somewhere to spawn. Aquatop list it as encouraging natural spawning and breeding behavior, and an enclosed sphere with one entrance is exactly the shape a lot of fish look for.
  • Cover reduces stress. New or shy stock settles faster when there is a dark space to retreat into, and shrimp will graze the textured surface as well as hide in it.
  • Looks like a moss ball. The fuzzy green finish reads as a natural Marimo rather than as an ornament, so it sits quietly in a planted scape.
  • Freshwater and saltwater. Aquatop rate it for both, and the material is non-toxic and aquarium safe.

Setting It Up

  1. Clean the glass where it is going. Algae or film under a suction cup is why suction cups fall off.
  2. Wet the cup, press it firmly to the glass and hold for a few seconds.
  3. Point the opening away from the main flow so the inside stays calm, which is the whole point of a refuge.
  4. Check it after the first day. If it creeps, take it off, clean both surfaces and remount.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this a real moss ball?
No. It is an ornament made to look like one. There is nothing living in it, so it will not melt, brown or need light.

Will the suction cup hold?
On clean glass, yes. Suction cups fail on algae film, not on weight. Wipe the spot first.

Can it sit on the substrate instead?
Yes, the cup just becomes a base. You lose the mid-water placement that makes it interesting, though.

Which size for shrimp?
Small is plenty for a shrimp colony and leaves room in a nano. Go Medium or Large if fish will be using it too.

Is it reef safe?
Aquatop rate it for freshwater and saltwater and list the material as non-toxic and aquarium safe.
