Exo Terra Plantation Soil Compressed Brick 8 qt
The Exo Terra Plantation Soil is a compressed brick of fine, 100% natural coconut fiber that expands into roughly 8 quarts of soft, soil-like substrate once soaked in water. Its fine, easy-to-dig texture holds moisture well, which makes it a go-to bedding for tropical and humidity-loving reptiles, amphibians, and invertebrates, plus bioactive and planted terrariums. Layer it over coarser Coco Husk chips for drainage and top it with Forest Plume Moss to raise and hold humidity.
Features
- Fine coconut fiber that expands to about 8 quarts (7.5 L) per brick
- Soft, natural texture ideal for burrowing, digging, and egg-laying species
- Holds moisture to help maintain tropical terrarium humidity
- Heat-treated, triple machine washed, and odor reducing
- Very resistant to mold and decay
- BioActive ready and safe for live terrarium plants
- Made from a renewable, sustainable coconut resource
How to Rehydrate
- Place the compressed brick in a clean bucket or large container.
- Add about 4 quarts (4 liters) of warm water.
- Let it soak for 20 to 30 minutes until fully expanded.
- Fluff and break apart the substrate, then spread it in your terrarium 2 to 3 inches deep, deeper for burrowing species.
- Mist as needed to keep the bedding lightly moist, never soggy.
One 8 qt brick fills most small to medium terrariums. Larger or heavily planted enclosures may use two or more.

Frequently Asked Questions
How is this different from Coco Husk?
Plantation Soil is a fine coconut coir with a soft, soil-like texture that holds moisture and is easy to dig. Coco Husk is a coarser chip that drains faster and is often used as a drainage layer or for very high humidity species. Many keepers combine the two.
Is it safe for bioactive setups?
Yes. It is BioActive ready, free of added chemicals, and works well with springtails, isopods, and live plants.
How much substrate does one brick make?
Each brick expands to roughly 8 quarts (7.5 L). A depth of 2 to 3 inches suits most species, and burrowing animals appreciate more.
Which animals is it best for?
Tropical and humidity-loving reptiles, amphibians, and invertebrates, such as many frogs, geckos, tropical snakes, tarantulas, and isopod or springtail cultures.
