Product description

The Fluval AquaClear Activated Carbon is the replacement chemical-filtration insert for the AquaClear 50 (AC50) power filter. Premium activated carbon adsorbs dissolved organics, odors, discoloration, and tannins, leaving your water crystal clear and odor-free. It works in both freshwater and saltwater aquariums. Formerly sold as AquaClear Carbon.

Use it as the polishing stage alongside the rest of the AC50 media: BioFoam for mechanical and biological filtration and, in freshwater, Ammonia Remover. Find every insert in our Filter Media & Cartridges collection.

Features

  • Activated carbon adsorbs dissolved organics, odors, and discoloration
  • Clears yellowing and tannins for bright, polished water
  • Custom-cut insert drops straight into the AquaClear 50 / Fluval AC50 media basket
  • Works in freshwater and saltwater aquariums
  • Pre-rinsed carbon in a ready-to-use pouch, no loose media to bag

How to Use

Rinse the insert briefly, then place it in the AquaClear media basket above the foam so water passes through it last. Carbon is most active when fresh; replace it about every three to four weeks, or sooner if odors or discoloration return. Remove the carbon whenever you dose medications, since it will adsorb them and reduce their effect, then add fresh carbon afterward to clear any residue.

FAQ

Which filter does this fit? The AquaClear 50 (also sold as the Fluval AC50), rated for 20 to 50 gallon aquariums.

How often should I replace it? Carbon exhausts as it fills up, so swap it about every three to four weeks for consistent water clarity.

Can I use it in saltwater? Yes. Activated carbon polishes both freshwater and marine water the same way.

Should I remove it when treating my fish? Yes. Take the carbon out while dosing medications so it does not strip the treatment, then run fresh carbon afterward to remove any leftover residue.
