Fluval AC50 Ammonia Remover Insert

The Fluval AquaClear Ammonia Remover is a replacement zeolite insert for the AquaClear 50 (AC50) power filter. The natural zeolite pulls toxic ammonia straight out of the water by ion exchange, giving you a fast safety net for new tanks that are still cycling, heavily stocked aquariums, or a sudden ammonia spike. It is a freshwater media. Formerly sold as AquaClear Ammonia Remover.

How to Use

Rinse the insert, then place it in the AquaClear media basket above the foam. It begins adsorbing ammonia right away and is most useful in new or overstocked tanks and during ammonia emergencies. Zeolite gradually fills up, so replace the insert every few weeks of heavy use, or once your test kit shows it is no longer keeping ammonia down. Once your tank is fully cycled and stable, you can switch this slot back to biomedia or carbon.

FAQ

Which filter does this fit? The AquaClear 50 (also sold as the Fluval AC50), rated for 20 to 50 gallon aquariums.

Can I use it in saltwater? No. Zeolite relies on ion exchange that saltwater saturates, so it does not remove ammonia in marine tanks. Use it in freshwater only.

How long does it last? It depends on your ammonia load. In a new or crowded tank it can fill up within a few weeks; replace it once a test kit shows ammonia creeping back up.

Should I run it all the time? It is best as a startup and emergency media. Once your tank is cycled and stable, most keepers return that slot to biomedia or carbon.
