Standing Up for the Hobby

Posted by Squeaky's Aquatics

If you have ever stood in front of a fish tank and felt the rest of the day slow down, you already know what we know. This hobby is not just decoration. It is biology, chemistry, patience, and a hundred small lessons that quietly add up to a way of paying attention to the natural world. That is worth protecting.

So we put our money where our tanks are. Squeaky's Aquatics is now a Silver Member of USAQUA, the new national advocacy organization working on behalf of every fishkeeper, every aquarium shop, and every kid pressing their nose against a tank in America.

If you have been in the hobby any length of time, you have heard the rumblings. Cities considering retail pet-sale bans. States proposing bans on entire fish species. Federal proposals that would make importing common aquarium fish prohibitively expensive or outright illegal. USAQUA is the organization standing in that gap. We wanted to tell you why we joined at the Silver level, and what it has to do with our quiet little family fish store in Lawrenceville.

What USAQUA Actually Is

USAQUA is a brand-new 501(c)(6) non-profit founded by attorney and lifelong aquarist Art Parola. Think of it as the missing piece between the millions of Americans who keep aquariums at home and the lawmakers who write the rules that affect them. It is modeled after USARK, the reptile-keeper organization that has been doing this work in the reptile world for years.

Their stated mission is built on three words we already live by: science, education, and conservation. They push for policies based on actual data instead of headlines. They defend the rights of responsible keepers and small retailers. They support sustainable fisheries, aquaculture, sound husbandry, and escape-prevention protocols. And they make sure that when somebody in Washington or your state capitol decides to ban a species or restrict a trade, the decision is informed by people who actually understand the animals.

Science. Education. Conservation. That is the whole reason we open the doors every day, and it is the same three words USAQUA is built on.

Why a Family Fish Store Cares About Policy

It would be easy for a shop our size to sit this out. We are not a chain. We do not have a lobbyist. We have a building, a few hundred fish at any given time, and a family that runs the whole thing.

But the decisions made at the federal and state level have a direct effect on what fish we can carry, what medications we can stock, where corals come from, and how aquaculture moves forward. A bad rule written by somebody who has never owned an aquarium can wipe out species choices for an entire generation of keepers. A good rule, written with input from people who actually understand the animals, protects both the fish and the people who love them.

USAQUA is the first organization we have seen that is actually trying to do that second thing.

More Than Just a Store

We have said it before and we will keep saying it. Squeaky's Aquatics is not just a place to buy a fish. It is a place to learn how to keep one alive, healthy, and thriving for years. Everything we have built has been aimed at that idea.

  • Our quarantine room is where every fish we sell spends real time before it ever sees the showroom. You can take a tour in our Behind-the-Scenes look at the QT Room. It is slower and more expensive than the way most stores do it, and we do it anyway because it is the right thing to do.
  • Our blog and care guides exist so you have honest information before and after you buy. Not marketing fluff. Real protocols, written by people who actually keep these animals.
  • Our conversations at the counter are where we will lose a sale before we sell you a fish that does not belong in your tank. We have talked people out of putting three male bettas in the same community tank, out of an oscar in a 20-gallon, out of a single tiger barb because it is going to nip everything in sight. We have sent people home with a smaller list of fish than they came in for, and they almost always come back to thank us.

Becoming a USAQUA Silver Member is the natural next step. It says that the same science-first, education-first approach we bring to our own shop should apply to the laws that govern the whole hobby.

Why We Actually Do This

It would be easy to pretend this is just a business. It is not, and we are not going to pretend.

We do this because of the kid who pressed his hand against the glass last Saturday and asked his mom why the clownfish was hiding in the anemone, and then sat through a five-minute answer with his eyes wide. We do this because of the grandmother who comes in every other week for frozen brine shrimp and tells us how her bettas are doing, by name, all four of them. We do this because of the dad who walked in nervous about his daughter's first 10-gallon and walked out with a plan instead of a panic.

We do this because there is something quietly important about a little box of saltwater or freshwater in somebody's living room. It teaches patience. It teaches that small choices add up. It teaches that you cannot rush biology. In a world that is loud and impatient, an aquarium is a slow, honest teacher, and we have watched it change people.

That is what gets protected when an organization like USAQUA fights a bad rule. Not just a market, not just a price tag, but the chance for a kid to grow up knowing what a healthy tank looks like, the chance for a family to share a hobby across generations, the chance for the next reefer or planted-tank obsessive to even discover that this world exists.

That is why our name is on the member list. That is why we are writing this post. And that is why we would rather be a teacher than a transaction, every single time.

What Your Membership Does

Here is the part that matters for you, the reader. USAQUA is not just for shops. It is for hobbyists. It is for the dad setting up his daughter's first 10-gallon. It is for the reefer with three frag tanks in the garage. It is for the planted-tank person, the betta breeder, the cichlid fanatic, and the saltwater fish-only crowd.

Membership starts at $20 a year. That is less than a small bag of frozen food. For that, you are funding legal work, science-based advocacy, and a real seat at the table when policy gets written. Bronze level ($40) gets you a tee shirt. Silver, Gold, and Platinum sponsorships are for those who want to put more weight behind the cause.

You can sign up at usaqua.org/become-a-member. We did. We would love it if you did too.

The Bigger Picture

We do not always know which species will be next on a regulatory list. We do not know which import lane will get squeezed. We do not know which medication, coral, or invert will get pulled from the table because of a story somebody told without the science to back it up.

What we do know is that the hobby works best when keepers, retailers, scientists, and policymakers are actually talking to each other. USAQUA is the first real attempt in a long time to make that conversation happen on a national scale. They deserve our support, and the hobby deserves their work.
