Product description

The Fluval AquaClear Clear-Carb is a two-in-one replacement insert for the AquaClear 50 (AC50) power filter. It pairs activated carbon, which removes odors, discoloration, and dissolved organics, with ClearMax, a resin that pulls phosphate, nitrite, and nitrate out of the water. Lowering phosphate starves nuisance algae, so the tank stays cleaner and needs less maintenance. It works in both freshwater and saltwater aquariums. Formerly sold as AquaClear Clear-Carb.

Run it as your polishing stage alongside BioFoam, or step up to plain Activated Carbon when you do not need phosphate control. Browse all inserts in our Filter Media & Cartridges collection.

Features

  • Activated carbon removes odors, discoloration, and dissolved organics
  • ClearMax resin removes phosphate, nitrite, and nitrate
  • Lowers phosphate to help starve nuisance algae
  • Keeps water clear and reduces maintenance between water changes
  • Custom-cut insert drops straight into the AquaClear 50 / Fluval AC50 media basket
  • Works in freshwater and saltwater aquariums

How to Use

Rinse the insert, then set it in the AquaClear media basket above the foam so water passes through it. Both the carbon and the ClearMax gradually exhaust, so replace the insert about every three to four weeks, or sooner if odors, discoloration, or algae return. Remove it while dosing medications, since the carbon will adsorb them, then add a fresh insert afterward.

FAQ

Which filter does this fit? The AquaClear 50 (also sold as the Fluval AC50), rated for 20 to 50 gallon aquariums.

What does ClearMax do? It is a resin that removes phosphate, nitrite, and nitrate, which helps control algae and keeps water quality high.

Can I use it in saltwater? Yes. Both the carbon and the ClearMax work in freshwater and marine tanks, and reef keepers often use phosphate removers to fight algae.

How often should I replace it? About every three to four weeks, or sooner if odors, discoloration, or algae come back.
