Fluval AC70/110 BioMax Insert
The Fluval AquaClear BioMax Insert is the biological heart of your filter. Each insert is packed with porous ceramic rings whose huge internal surface area gives beneficial nitrifying bacteria a place to colonize, powering the nitrogen cycle that breaks down toxic ammonia and nitrite. Sized for the AquaClear 70 and 110 filters, BioMax works in both freshwater and saltwater aquariums and comes as a single insert or a value 2-pack.
Slot it into your AquaClear (AC) power filter alongside your foam and carbon media. Running a smaller filter? Choose the AC50 BioMax instead. Pair it with Clear-Carb for chemical filtration, and find more media in our Filter Media & Cartridges collection.
Features
- Porous ceramic rings offer a massive surface area for beneficial bacteria
- Powers the nitrogen cycle to break down toxic ammonia and nitrite
- Long-lasting biological media that keeps your tank stable
- Sized for the AquaClear 70 and 110 power filters
- Available as a single insert or a money-saving 2-pack
- Works in both freshwater and saltwater aquariums
How to Use
Rinse BioMax gently in old aquarium water, never tap water, which kills the bacteria, then place it in the media basket after the mechanical foam. Because the beneficial bacteria live on the rings, replace only about half of your BioMax at a time every few months so the colony is never wiped out and your tank stays cycled.

FAQ
What does BioMax do? Its porous ceramic rings host the beneficial bacteria that run your tank's nitrogen cycle, converting toxic ammonia and nitrite into far less harmful nitrate.
How often should I replace it? Swap only about half at a time every few months. Replacing all of it at once removes your bacteria colony and can trigger a mini-cycle.
Should I get the single or the 2-pack? The 2-pack is the better value and lets you stagger replacements. A single insert is fine for topping up one filter.
Can I use it in saltwater? Yes. BioMax provides biological filtration in both freshwater and marine aquariums.
