The Red Caribbean Pistol Shrimp (Alpheus sp.) brings bright color and fascinating snapping behavior to a carefully planned saltwater aquarium. Its enlarged claw makes the characteristic pop, while its secretive, territorial habits make it an intermediate-care choice.

Care Guide

  • Build a secure home: Provide sand, sheltered crevices and stable rockwork. Support rocks on a solid base so digging cannot undermine them.
  • Feed near its shelter: Offer small portions of PE Mysis, finely chopped marine seafood or appropriate sinking foods. Ensure it receives food rather than relying on leftovers.
  • Keep conditions stable: Acclimate carefully, monitor salinity and temperature, and avoid sudden changes.
  • Protect the shrimp: Avoid copper-based medications and leave it undisturbed during molting. Provide hiding space while the new shell hardens.

Compatibility

Do not buy this shrimp expecting a goby partnership. The Red Caribbean trade form is associated with Curlycue Anemones rather than the usual shrimp gobies. An anemone is not included, and we do not recommend adding one without planning for its separate care requirements.

Choose fish that will not eat shrimp. Avoid shrimp-eating predators, small ornamental shrimp and lobsters. Keep one unless an established compatible pair is confirmed. Corals are generally left alone, but digging can disturb loose frags near its shelter.

FAQ

Will it pair with my Watchman Goby?
Do not assume it will. Ask us about a confirmed goby-associated pistol shrimp if that relationship is your goal.

Why does it make a popping sound?
Its specialized snapping claw produces the pop, often during defense.

Will I see it all day?
It may spend much of its time concealed. Feeding near its shelter can make observation easier without disturbing it.

What does one purchase include?
One Red Caribbean Pistol Shrimp. It is sold under the supplier trade name; exact species, sex, size and markings are not guaranteed.
