Seachem ParaGuard
Seachem ParaGuard is a broad-spectrum treatment that clears external parasites and fungal, bacterial, and viral lesions in both freshwater and saltwater aquariums. Because it contains no formaldehyde or methanol and will not harm your biological filter, it is gentle enough to run in a display tank yet effective enough for a dedicated quarantine. Find it alongside the rest of our fish medications.
What ParaGuard Treats
- External parasites including ich (white spot), velvet, and flukes.
- Fungal infections and cottony growths on skin and fins.
- Bacterial and viral lesions such as fin rot and open sores.
- New-arrival quarantine, a preventive dip or treatment before fish join your display.
Why It Is Different
- No formaldehyde or methanol, so it is safer to handle and dose than formalin-based medications.
- Will not crash your biofilter, letting you treat in the main tank without restarting your cycle.
- Fresh and saltwater, one bottle covers community tanks, cichlids, and reef-safe fish-only systems.
- Gentle on plants and gravel, it does not stain silicone or ornaments the way some dyes do.
How to Use
Tank treatment: add 5 mL (one capful) per 10 US gallons (40 L) once daily for as long as your fish show no stress. Continue for the full treatment window, typically 7 to 14 days for freshwater ich and up to 28 days for saltwater ich. Quick dip: use 3 mL per 1 US gallon (4 L) for a one-hour bath. Remove chemical filtration such as Seachem Purigen or activated carbon while dosing, since it adsorbs the medication, then run it again afterward to polish the water. For scaleless fish and sensitive species such as loaches, start at a quarter to half dose and build up.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is ParaGuard safe for my biological filter?
Yes. Unlike many medications, ParaGuard will not adversely affect the nitrifying bacteria in your filter, so you can treat in the display tank.
Can I use it with scaleless fish?
Yes, with care. For loaches, catfish, and other sensitive species, start at a quarter to half dose and build up slowly while watching for stress.
Do I need to remove carbon or Purigen?
Yes. Chemical filtration absorbs the medication, so take it offline during treatment and resume it afterward to clear any residual color.
Is it reef safe?
ParaGuard is intended for fish and fish-only saltwater systems. Do not use it in a reef tank with corals or invertebrates.
