Seachem Purigen
Seachem Purigen is a premium synthetic filtration resin that pulls dissolved organic waste out of your water before it can break down into ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate. The result is water polished to a sparkling clarity in both freshwater and saltwater. Best of all, Purigen is regenerable, so a single portion can be renewed and reused many times over. It is one of the most versatile pieces in our filter media lineup.
How Purigen Works
Purigen is a macro-porous synthetic adsorbent that captures soluble and insoluble organic impurities at a rate and capacity Seachem rates at over 500 percent beyond competing products. By removing that waste at the source, it lightens the load on your biological filter and helps keep nitrogen compounds in check. As it works, the resin darkens from off-white toward brown, giving you a clear visual cue for when it is time to renew.
Why Hobbyists Rely on It
- Crystal-clear water, it removes the organics that leave water tinted or hazy.
- Controls nitrogen waste, adsorbing organics before they release ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate.
- Fresh and saltwater, one media for planted tanks, community setups, and reef systems.
- Regenerable and reusable, renew it with a bleach soak and dechlorination to restore full capacity.
- Built-in exhaustion indicator, the resin darkens as it fills, so you never have to guess when to recharge.
How to Use
Rinse Purigen before use and place it in a fine mesh filter bag, 180 micron or smaller, where water flows through it well. The 100 ml size comes pre-bagged, while larger volumes are loose resin best held in a media bag. Replace or regenerate the resin once it turns brown. To regenerate, soak it in a 1:1 bleach and water solution, rinse thoroughly, then soak in a strong dechlorinator such as Seachem Prime before returning it to the tank. Do not use scented or thickened bleaches.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I know when Purigen is used up?
The resin darkens as it adsorbs organics and turns a deep brown when exhausted. That color change is your signal to regenerate or replace it.
How do I regenerate it?
Soak the resin in a 1:1 bleach and water solution, rinse well, then soak in a strong dechlorinator before reusing. Skip regeneration for saltwater use if it has been heavily fouled.
Will Purigen remove medications?
Yes. It adsorbs many treatments, so remove Purigen from the filter while you are dosing medication, then return it afterward to polish the water.
Does it work in both fresh and saltwater?
Absolutely. Purigen is designed for planted, community, and reef systems alike.
