Product description

Anubias Nana Gold (Anubias barteri var. nana 'Golden') is the sought-after chartreuse form of the classic dwarf Anubias, pushing out bright golden-green new leaves that glow against dark hardscape. Like all Anubias it is nearly indestructible, thriving in low light with no CO2, and its tough leaves shrug off nibbling from fish that destroy softer plants. Sold as a rhizome clump ready to tie or glue to wood or rock. Browse the rest of our live freshwater plants to build out your aquascape.

Care Guide

  • Never bury the rhizome: attach the thick horizontal rhizome to driftwood or rock with thread or a dab of gel glue. A rhizome buried in substrate will rot.
  • Lighting: low to moderate. Because it grows slowly, strong light mostly feeds algae on the older leaves, so keep it modest.
  • Feeding: a light column feeder. Occasional dosing of a comprehensive fertilizer keeps the golden new growth vivid.
  • CO2: not required. Growth is slow either way, which is normal for Anubias.
  • Algae tip: gentle flow and modest light keep the slow leaves clean.

Compatibility

One of the toughest aquarium plants you can own. Anubias Nana Gold is safe with virtually everything, including cichlids and goldfish that shred most plants, because its leaves are thick and bitter. It pairs beautifully with Amano Shrimp and nerite snails, which graze algae off the broad leaves without harming them.

FAQ

Can I plant it in the substrate? Only the roots. Keep the rhizome (the thick horizontal stem) above the substrate or attached to hardscape, a buried rhizome rots.

Why are the new leaves gold? It is a naturally selected color form of Anubias nana. The golden tone is strongest on fresh growth and settles to a lighter green as leaves age.

Does it need CO2 or special light? No. Low to moderate light and no CO2 suit it perfectly.

Is it safe with goldfish and cichlids? Yes, it is one of the few plants tough enough to survive with them.
