Choose Your Size

A common rule of thumb is about 1 to 1.5 lb per gallon for a 1 to 2 inch bed. Deeper beds, larger footprints, and planted layouts will want more. Ask us in-store and we will help you work out how much you need.

Setting It Up

Rinse the pebble before it goes in, then add it to the empty tank and fill slowly over a plate or bag so you do not cloud the water or dig craters in the bed. Because this is a coarser pebble rather than a fine sand, debris tends to settle down between the stones, so work your gravel vacuum into the bed during water changes to keep it clean.

FAQ

How much do I need? Roughly 1 to 1.5 lb per gallon gives a 1 to 2 inch bed. A 20 gallon tank usually lands around the 20 lb bag.

Do I need to rinse it? Yes, give it a rinse first. That keeps the initial cloudiness down and clears out any dust from the bag.

Is it painted or dyed? No. The dark color is natural, which is why it holds up over time instead of fading or chipping.

Is this sand or gravel? It is a pebble grade, coarser than aquarium sand, so it reads like a natural river bed. Vacuum into the bed at water changes since waste settles between the stones.
