Shark teeth are hard and mineral-rich, which makes them one of the most common vertebrate fossils in the world. Over millions of years they soak up warm colors from the minerals in the surrounding sediment.

Wire-wrapped fossil teeth like these typically come from the phosphate deposits of Morocco, and most belong to Otodus obliquus, an extinct shark that lived roughly 50 to 60 million years ago. Otodus is the same lineage that later produced the giant Megalodon (Otodus megalodon), and it was a distant relative of today's great white and sand tiger sharks.
