Fritz Ammonia Test Strips | Total Ammonia (NH3 + NH4+) Test for Freshwater & Saltwater
The Fritz Ammonia Test Strips are the fastest way to spot a problem in your tank before it costs you fish. One quick dip reads total ammonia — both toxic free ammonia (NH3) and ammonium (NH4+) — across a 0 to 8 ppm range, and the strips work in freshwater and saltwater. Keep a pack near your tank kit for new tank cycling, post-medication checkups, and any time fish look off.
Pairs naturally with the rest of our water testing collection and the full maintenance & water care lineup.
Why these strips work
- Reads total ammonia — captures both NH3 and NH4+ so you see the real picture, not just one form.
- 0 to 8 ppm range — covers everything from a perfectly cycled tank to a serious problem.
- Fast result — dip, swirl, read. No reagent bottles to drip or count.
- Fresh & saltwater — one pack for every system in the fishroom.
- Sealed bottle — strips stay dry and accurate between uses.
How to use them
- Remove one strip from the bottle and close the cap tightly.
- Dip the strip in and out of the aquarium water 30 times.
- Pull the strip out with the test pad facing up (so water doesn't run across it).
- Immediately compare the pad to the color chart on the bottle.
- Read the result right away — the color will keep changing after that, so a delayed read is not accurate.
What your result means
| 0 ppm | Ideal. Tank is cycled and processing waste. |
| Up to 0.5 ppm | Reduce feeding, vacuum debris, add Fritz Complete to detoxify ammonia, and boost bio-filter with FritzZyme 7. |
| 1–2 ppm | Perform a ~50% water change, re-dose conditioner, and re-test in a few hours. |
| 2+ ppm | Significant water change of 75% or more, treat with conditioner, and identify the source (overstocking, dead fish, missed cycle). |

FAQ
How many tests come in a bottle?
A single Fritz Ammonia Test Strip bottle typically contains 100 strips, so it covers daily testing during a tank cycle and still has plenty left for routine maintenance.
Does it work for saltwater and reef tanks?
Yes — these strips are rated for both freshwater and saltwater systems, including reef tanks where any ammonia reading is a problem worth solving fast.
Why does it read "total" ammonia instead of just toxic ammonia?
Free ammonia (NH3) is the truly toxic form, but in fresh water it exists in equilibrium with NH4+. The total reading plus your pH and temperature tell you how much is in the toxic form. For most tanks, getting any reading above 0 means it's time to act.
Can I read the strip later?
No — read it immediately. The colors keep developing after the test, so a delayed read can show a much higher number than the actual water value.
How should I store the bottle?
Keep the cap on tight, away from humidity, and out of direct sunlight. Damp strips give bad readings.
