Fritz Wide Range pH Test Kit

What's in the Box

Why Test pH

pH measures how acidic or alkaline your water is on a scale of 0 to 14, and the preferred range varies by species. Fritz notes that a consistent pH is better than frequent swings, and that pH is influenced by KH, respiration, organic waste and the nitrogen cycle. Fritz recommends testing established aquariums at least weekly, and more often for new aquariums or when fish are sick or dying.

How to Test

1. Fill the test tube to the 5 mL line with aquarium water.
2. Add 3 drops of pH reagent, holding the bottle upside down and completely vertical.
3. Cap the tube and shake gently to mix.
4. Immediately match the color against the chart. Freshwater and saltwater results are read differently, so use the correct scale.

Rinse the tube with clean water after each use, keep test solutions out of the aquarium, and follow the full instructions in the box.

Reading Your Results

Fritz's general guide:

• 5.5 to 7.0: acidic freshwater species such as tetras, discus, angelfish and other South American fish
• 7.0 to 7.6: most community fish, goldfish and aquarium plants
• 7.6 to 8.6: livebearers such as mollies and guppies, and African cichlids
• 8.1 to 8.3: marine aquariums

Fritz adds that a stable pH, even one slightly outside the ideal range, is less stressful to fish than frequent swings.
