Java Moss (Taxiphyllum barbieri) - Cup
Java Moss (Taxiphyllum barbieri) is the classic, nearly indestructible aquarium moss and the perfect starting point for any planted or shrimp tank. It grows in loose, sprawling branches that cling to driftwood, rock, and mesh, thriving across an enormous range of light and temperature with no CO2 needed. It arrives as a clean tissue-culture cup, grown in vitro and free of snails, algae, and pesticides, with plenty of healthy moss to spread across your hardscape. Why Tissue Culture
Tissue-culture moss is propagated in a sterile lab and sold in a sealed cup of nutrient gel. That means no hitchhiking pest snails, no nuisance algae, and no pesticide residue, so it is completely safe for shrimp, fry, and sensitive invertebrates. Rinse the gel off under dechlorinated water before you attach it, and you start with clean, vigorous growth.
Care Guide
- Light: Low to high. It grows in almost any lighting, staying denser and more compact under brighter light.
- CO2: Not required. Injected CO2 speeds growth, but Java Moss thrives perfectly well without it.
- Temperature: Extremely tolerant, from the upper 50s to the mid 80s F, making it ideal for unheated and tropical tanks alike.
- Attaching: Tie or glue a thin layer onto wood, rock, or mesh. It anchors with fine rhizoids and needs no substrate. Trim it to keep any shape you like.

In the Aquascape
Java Moss is the workhorse of the planted tank. Tie it to driftwood and branches, build moss walls and carpets, craft bonsai-tree canopies, or let it sprawl as a natural refuge for shrimp and fry. Its dense growth traps biofilm that baby shrimp graze on, and it shelters fry from larger tankmates. Forgiving of neglect and almost impossible to kill, it is the moss every aquascaper reaches for first.
Pairs Well With
- Spiky Moss for a neater, upright texture alongside Java Moss's sprawl.
- Christmas Moss to layer a feathery, draping contrast across the same wood.
- Neocaridina shrimp that graze the moss for biofilm and raise their young in it.
- Malaysian driftwood as the perfect anchor for attaching and growing out your moss.
FAQ
Is Java Moss good for beginners?
Yes. It is the easiest aquarium moss there is, tolerating low light, no CO2, and a huge temperature range. It is nearly impossible to kill.
How do I attach it?
Tie or glue a thin layer to wood, rock, or mesh. It has no roots, so it simply anchors itself as it grows. Spreading it thin gives the cleanest attachment.
Is it safe for shrimp and fry?
Yes. Tissue-culture moss is grown without pesticides and arrives free of pests, so it is completely safe for shrimp, fry, and other sensitive invertebrates.
Does it need CO2?
No. Java Moss grows fine without CO2. Adding it simply produces faster, denser growth.
