Mixed Oranda Goldfish (Carassius auratus)
Your order is reserved — we hold off on bagging until you arrive, so it stays healthy in its display tank.
The Mixed Oranda Goldfish (Carassius auratus) is one of the most beloved fancy goldfish varieties — recognized worldwide for its plump round body, flowing twin tail, and the distinctive raspberry-like "wen" growth that crowns its head as it matures. Our mixed assortment rotates through the season and may include red, red-cap, calico, chocolate, blue, and full-bodied color morphs — come by the shop and pick your favorite directly from our display tanks at Squeaky's Aquatics.
Orandas are coolwater fancy goldfish — not tropical community fish. Plan a dedicated fancy-goldfish setup with strong filtration, lots of swimming room, and tank mates limited to other fancy goldfish (Ranchu, Ryukin, Telescope, Lionhead, Pearlscale). Browse our freshwater fish collection for compatible options.
Care Guide
- Care Level: Intermediate — hardy and personable, but they're heavy waste producers and demand strong filtration plus regular water changes.
- Tank Size: 30 gallons minimum for a single adult; add 15–20 gallons per additional Oranda. A long horizontal footprint beats a tall tank — they swim, not climb.
- Water Temperature: 65–75°F (18–24°C). They tolerate cool home temps — no heater required in most homes, but avoid wild temperature swings.
- pH: 7.0–8.4 — prefers slightly alkaline, hard water.
- Hardness: 5–19 dGH — tolerant of a wide range.
- Filtration: Oversize it. Aim for a filter rated 2–3× the tank volume. Orandas are messy eaters and produce more waste than tropical fish their size.
- Diet: Omnivore. Feed quality sinking pellets like API Goldfish Pellets, supplemented with blanched peas (great for swim-bladder issues), spinach, zucchini, and occasional frozen brine or bloodworms. Feed twice daily in small amounts — overfeeding is the #1 cause of bloat.
- Décor: Smooth rocks and rounded driftwood only — the wen is delicate and can scrape on sharp edges. Skip very fine substrate; rounded gravel or sand is safer.
- Lifespan: 10–15 years with good care, sometimes 20+ in well-maintained tanks.

Compatibility
Best with: other fancy goldfish — Ranchu, Ryukin, Telescope (Black Moor), Lionhead, Pearlscale, Bubble Eye, and other Orandas. Mixing fancy varieties is fine as long as everyone has similar swimming speed and body shape.
Algae helpers: trapdoor snails like the White Wizard Snail tolerate cool water and won't outcompete your goldfish for food.
Avoid: common goldfish, comets, and shubunkins (faster swimmers will steal all the food and stress out the fancies); tropical community fish (water-temperature mismatch and slow Orandas get nipped); aggressive cichlids; fin-nippers like tiger barbs; and any predator large enough to eat them. Skip plecos — they're known to suck on the slime coat of slow-moving fancy goldfish.

FAQ
What does "Mixed" mean?
We rotate through whatever colors and patterns our supplier shipments bring in — expect a mix of red, red-cap, calico, blue, chocolate, and full-bodied morphs. Come into the shop and we'll net you the specific fish you want from the display tank.
When will the wen grow in?
Wen development typically starts around 6–12 months and is usually well-established by 1–2 years. Final wen size depends on genetics, diet, and water quality — a varied protein-rich diet and clean water encourage fuller growth.
Can I keep my Oranda with my tropical fish?
No. Orandas are coolwater fish (65–75°F) and tropical fish need 76–82°F. The temperature mismatch stresses both, and most tropical community fish are too fast or fin-nippy for slow round-bodied fancies. Keep Orandas in a dedicated fancy-goldfish setup.
Do I need a heater?
Usually not. If your home stays between 65–78°F year-round, skip the heater. Use one only if your tank drops below 60°F or fluctuates more than 5°F overnight.
Why are my goldfish floating sideways after feeding?
Classic fancy-goldfish swim-bladder symptom — their compressed round bodies make them prone to it. Try presoaking pellets so they sink (don't take in air), fasting 24 hours, then offering blanched, deshelled peas. If it doesn't resolve in a few days, give us a call.
