Seachem Filter Socks
Mechanical filtration that keeps your water crystal clear. Seachem Filter Socks are reusable felt filter bags that slip over your sump's drain line to trap detritus, uneaten food, and fine particulate before it breaks down into nutrients. They are the first line of mechanical filtration in any sump, for freshwater and saltwater systems alike. Rinse and reuse them, or swap in a fresh sock while one dries.
Follow your socks with chemical media like Seachem Purigen for polished, clear water, and browse our skimmers, reactors & filtration.
Choose Your Size & Micron
| Size (ring x length) | Micron | Filtration | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| 4" x 12" | 200 | General mechanical, high flow | Smaller sumps with a 4 inch sock holder |
| 7" x 16" | 100 | Fine polishing, crystal-clear water | Reef and detail-focused tanks |
| 7" x 16" | 200 | General mechanical, high flow | Everyday use, less frequent changes |
Match the ring diameter (4 inch or 7 inch) to your sump's filter sock holder. A lower micron number filters finer but clogs faster; a higher number moves more water and needs changing less often.
Why Filter Socks
- Traps particulate so waste is removed before it dissolves into your water column.
- Reusable felt, rinse or machine wash and use again instead of throwing it away.
- Two micron ratings, 100 for fine polishing or 200 for higher flow and longer intervals.
- Freshwater and saltwater, works in any sump-based system.
How to Use
- Slip the sock's ring onto your sump's filter sock holder so all the drain water passes through it.
- Let it fill and filter. Detritus collects inside the felt as water flows through.
- Change or rinse it every few days, or sooner if the flow slows. Wash in cold water without detergent and let it dry before reuse.

Frequently Asked Questions
What micron should I choose?
100 micron filters finer and gives you clearer water, but it clogs faster and needs changing more often. 200 micron moves more water and lasts longer between changes. Many keepers start with 200 and step to 100 when they want extra polish.
What size do I need?
Match the ring diameter to your sump's filter sock holder. A 4 inch holder takes the 4 inch sock, and a 7 inch holder takes the 7 inch sock.
Are they reusable?
Yes. Rinse or wash them in cold water without soap, let them dry, and use them again.
Freshwater or saltwater?
Both. Filter socks provide mechanical filtration in any sump, freshwater or reef.
