Seachem Marine Buffer
Seachem Marine Buffer safely raises and holds marine pH at 8.3, the target range for saltwater and reef aquariums. Unlike plain sodium bicarbonate, it is a blended buffer that will not push pH above 8.3 even if you overdose, so it is forgiving and easy to use. Each dose also nudges alkalinity up by about 1 meq/L, helping stabilize the whole carbonate system. Browse our full range of additives and supplements and the rest of the Seachem lineup.
Why Reefers Use It
- Targets pH 8.3. Brings low saltwater pH up to the ideal marine range.
- Will not overshoot. It cannot raise pH above 8.3, even if you add too much.
- Blended formula. Carbonate and bicarbonate salts of sodium, magnesium, calcium, strontium, and potassium, not just baking soda.
- Supports alkalinity. Each dose raises alkalinity by roughly 1 meq/L.
How to Use
To raise pH, add 5 g (1 level teaspoon) for every 80 litres (about 20 US gallons) once daily until pH stabilizes at 8.3, which can take anywhere from a day to a week. Raise pH gradually, no more than about 0.2 units per day, to avoid stressing livestock. Once stable, dose every two to four weeks as needed to hold 8.3. Always test pH and alkalinity before and during dosing.

FAQ
Will Marine Buffer push my pH too high?
No. It is designed to stop at 8.3 and will not raise pH above that level, even if overdosed.
Can I use it in a freshwater tank?
No. Marine Buffer is for saltwater and reef tanks only. For freshwater, use a freshwater alkaline buffer instead.
Does it raise alkalinity as well as pH?
Yes. Each dose raises alkalinity by roughly 1 meq/L, which helps keep the carbonate system stable.
How quickly should I raise pH?
Go slowly. Aim to raise pH no more than about 0.2 units per day so corals, fish, and invertebrates are not stressed.
