The Tiger Watchman Goby (Valenciennea wardii) is one of the sharpest-dressed sand sifters in the hobby: bold chocolate bands over a cream body, a black eyespot flying on the first dorsal fin, and neon blue accents across the cheek. Also called Ward's Sleeper Goby, it earns its keep by scooping mouthfuls of sand all day, sifting out food, and raining the cleaned sand back out through its gills, leaving a polished sand bed behind. • Tank size: 55 gallons or larger with a generous footprint. Sand real estate is what this fish actually lives on.
• Established sand bed required: at least 2 inches of fine sand in a mature tank. Sleeper gobies sift constantly, and an immature bed cannot feed one; this is the single most important requirement.
• Target feeding: sand microfauna alone is rarely enough in home tanks. Offer meaty frozen foods like mysis and enriched brine 2 to 3 times daily, delivered near its patch of sand so it wins the race.
• Water parameters: 72 to 78°F, salinity 1.020 to 1.026, pH 8.1 to 8.4.
• Tight lid, no exceptions: sleeper gobies are famous carpet surfers, and a startled Tiger will find any gap.
• Reef note: fully reef safe with corals, though its sand plumes can dust low-mounted frags. Keep LPS off the sand line or angle flow to clear it.

Peaceful with virtually everything except its own kind; keep one per tank unless you land a mated pair. It ignores corals, shrimp, and fish, and asks only that nobody else claim its stretch of sand, so avoid stacking multiple sand-sifting sleepers in modest tanks. FAQ

Will it really clean my sand bed?
Yes, visibly. A working sleeper goby turns over the top layer constantly, keeping it bright and preventing algae film. The trade-off is occasional sand dust on nearby rocks and frags.

Why do sleeper gobies starve in some tanks?
They burn energy sifting all day, and a young tank's sand holds little food. A mature sand bed plus deliberate target feeding 2 to 3 times a day keeps a Tiger thick and active for years.

Does it need a pistol shrimp?
No. Sleeper gobies dig their own burrows and live solo. The goby-and-pistol-shrimp partnership involves different species, like the Yellow Watchman.

Is it aggressive toward other gobies?
Only toward other sand-sifting sleepers competing for the same sand. Shrimp gobies, firefish, and blennies with different jobs are generally ignored.
