Weeping Moss (Vesicularia ferriei) is a delicate freshwater moss that grows in soft, draping fronds — the tips arch downward, giving any hardscape a "willow tree" look that's hard to get from any other aquarium plant. Tissue-cultured in a cup, this portion is clean, snail-free, and ready to tie onto driftwood, rocks, or mesh. Pair with the rest of our freshwater plants.

Why Weeping Moss

  • Distinctive weeping habit — fronds grow downward instead of outward, perfect for branchy driftwood and tree-style aquascapes.
  • Tissue culture cup — clean, snail-free, and free of pesticides; safe to use in shrimp tanks straight from the cup.
  • Shrimp-safe — the dense, fine texture is a magnet for biofilm and the perfect grazing surface for Neocaridina and Caridina shrimp.
  • Low-light forgiving — works in nano tanks, shaded corners, or under floating plants where other mosses thin out.
  • Excellent fry refuge — bettas, killifish, and small livebearer fry love hiding in the dense growth.

How to Plant

  1. Rinse the moss in dechlorinated water and tease apart into smaller portions with your fingers.
  2. Spread thinly across the hardscape — moss spreads better when it's stretched, not piled.
  3. Tie with cotton thread (dissolves after a few weeks) or super glue gel directly to dry driftwood/rock.
  4. Trim with sharp scissors as it grows to keep the weeping shape; floating fragments can re-attach elsewhere.

FAQ

Will Weeping Moss grow without CO₂?
Yes — it's one of the easier mosses for low-tech tanks. CO₂ just speeds up the growth and tightens the form.

How do I attach it without dying?
Don't bury it. Tie with cotton thread or use a tiny dab of cyanoacrylate (super glue gel) on a dry surface, then submerge. It'll attach itself within a few weeks.

Is the cup ready to plant?
Yes — rinse off the gel substrate the tissue culture is grown in, separate into small portions, and attach. One cup goes a long way when stretched out.

What's the difference between Weeping Moss and Christmas Moss?
Both are Vesicularia species. Christmas Moss grows in tight, triangular fronds that look like little fir trees. Weeping Moss drapes downward — choose by the look you want.
