Why fluorine matters
- Color and gloss: Fluorine supports vivid color and natural gloss in many corals, particularly Goniopora and Acropora; a deficiency can leave tissue pale or dull.
- Skeletal strength: Corals build fluorine into their skeletons as a calcium fluoride complex; without enough, skeletons can turn brittle.
- Long-term health: Supports several metabolic pathways corals rely on.
Common causes of a deficiency (per ATI): strong stony coral growth, low levels in salt mixes, or removal by aggressive skimming and adsorbers such as activated carbon.
