Why lithium matters
- Ionic presence: Lithium is a very light element, so even at a low concentration natural seawater holds a large number of lithium ions, which suggests a basic biological role.
- Potential benefits: ATI notes lithium is theorized to influence enzyme activity and cellular metabolism; specific deficiency symptoms are not yet fully documented.
Common causes of a deficiency (per ATI): low-lithium salt mixes or media such as zeolite and activated carbon that strip trace elements.
