Why manganese matters
- Photosynthesis: Manganese is a key cofactor in the water-splitting step of photosynthesis; a deficiency directly impairs zooxanthellae.
- Coral color: Too little manganese often leaves SPS corals pale as their metabolism slows.
- Oxidative stress: Part of enzyme processes that protect coral tissue from oxidative damage.
Common causes of a deficiency (per ATI): chemical media such as activated carbon or zeolite, which bind manganese, plus aggressive skimming or ozone, which can deplete it quickly.
