Care Guide
Quick essentials below — for the full walkthrough, read our Betta Care Guide.
- Tank size: 5 gallons minimum, 10+ gallons recommended. Alien bettas are slightly more active than standard splendens and appreciate the extra swimming room.
- Water: 76–82°F, pH 6.5–7.5, soft to moderately hard water. Stable parameters matter more than chasing exact numbers.
- Filtration & flow: Gentle filtration only — sponge filters or low-flow HOBs work best. Strong current will exhaust him.
- Aquascape: Heavily planted tanks with broad-leaf plants (anubias, java fern, amazon swords) and at least one cave or hide give him resting spots and reduce stress. Floating plants help dim the surface.
- Diet: Strict carnivore. Feed a high-protein staple like New Life Spectrum Betta Semi-Floating Pellets or Seachem NutriDiet Betta with Probiotics, supplemented with frozen bloodworms, brine shrimp, or daphnia 1–2x weekly. Feed small amounts 1–2x daily — overfeeding causes bloat.
- Lid required: Bettas are jumpers. A tight-fitting lid is non-negotiable.
- Maintenance: 25% weekly water changes with a quality conditioner like Seachem Prime.

Compatibility
Alien bettas can be more aggressive than standard splendens due to their wild-species genetics — temperament varies fish-to-fish, so always have a backup plan and watch closely after any introduction.
- Possible tank mates (10+ gallon, well-planted): harlequin rasboras, ember tetras, neon tetras, pygmy or panda corydoras, kuhli loaches, otocinclus, nerite snails.
- Avoid: any other male betta (will fight to the death), fin-nippers (tiger barbs, serpae tetras), large or aggressive cichlids, brightly colored or long-finned fish (guppies, fancy goldfish), and shrimp (often eaten).
- Solo is fine: A 5-gallon species-only tank is a perfectly happy life for an alien betta.

Frequently Asked Questions
What exactly is an "alien" betta?
Alien bettas are interspecies hybrids — typically Betta splendens crossed with one or more wild species like B. mahachaiensis, B. smaragdina, or B. imbellis. The wild blood gives them the iridescent, almost metallic scaling that ordinary bettas don't have.
Is this fish a plakat?
Yes. "Plakat" refers to the short-finned, wild-style body shape. Plakat bettas are stronger swimmers and generally hardier than long-finned varieties.
Can I keep him in a 2.5 or 3 gallon tank?
We don't recommend it. 5 gallons is the absolute minimum for any betta, and 10 gallons gives an alien betta the room he really wants.
Will the colors change?
Possibly. Marble bettas carry a "jumping gene" that can shift their color pattern over their lifetime — your fish may look different in 6 months. It's part of the fun of owning a marble.
Local pickup only?
Yes. Squeaky's Aquatics livestock is sold for in-store pickup at our Georgia showroom only.
