Chemi-pure
Boyd Chemi-pure is the original all-in-one filter media that has kept aquariums crystal clear for over 60 years. It blends premium pelletized activated carbon with ion-exchange resin in a ready-to-use nylon bag, pulling dissolved organics, heavy metals, copper, and phenols out of the water while holding pH steady and constant. It is safe in freshwater, saltwater, and reef tanks, and is a long-time favorite for African cichlids and Discus. Browse the rest of our filter media and cartridges.
How It Works
Chemi-pure acts as a chemical absorption filter, ion generator, and exchange unit all at once. The activated carbon adsorbs dissolved organics, odors, and discoloration, while the ion-exchange resin removes toxic heavy metals like copper and stabilizes pH. Because it does not strip beneficial trace elements, it is gentle enough for reef tanks yet powerful enough to keep large freshwater systems sparkling. Drop the sealed bag into your filter, sump, or canister and replace it about every four months.

Chemi-pure or Chemi-pure Elite?
Original Chemi-pure focuses on carbon and resin for water clarity, heavy-metal removal, and stable pH. If you also need active phosphate and silicate control to starve nuisance algae, step up to Chemi-pure Elite, which adds GFO to the same proven blend.
FAQ
Is Chemi-pure reef-safe?
Yes. It removes toxins and discoloration without stripping the beneficial trace elements your corals and invertebrates rely on.
How often should I replace it?
Plan on a fresh bag about every four months, or sooner in a heavily stocked tank.
Where do I put it?
Place the sealed nylon bag anywhere with good water flow: a hang-on-back filter, canister tray, or sump. The more flow through the bag, the better it works.
Do I need to rinse it first?
A quick rinse under tap water clears any fine dust, but the QuickWash Carbon comes pre-washed so it rinses clear in seconds.
