Product description

In-store pickup only. Your order is reserved, we hold off on bagging until you arrive so it stays healthy in its display tank.

Cryptocoryne Lucens is the tidy one in the crypt family: slim, glossy, deep-green leaves in compact rosettes that slowly knit into a neat, low hedge across the foreground. Like all crypts it is a set-and-forget plant, thriving in low light without CO2 and growing steadily for years once it settles in. Small tanks, dim tanks, beginner tanks, it works everywhere. Care Guide

  • Planting: remove the pot and rock wool, split the clump into individual plantlets, and plant them an inch or two apart in the foreground. They fill in by sending runners.
  • Feed the roots: crypts are root feeders. A root tab under the patch every few months keeps the hedge thick.
  • Light: low to moderate. Lucens keeps its neat shape even in the dim corners where carpet plants give up.
  • Water parameters: 72 to 82°F, pH 6.0 to 7.8, soft or hard. Crypts prize stability over any particular number.
  • Crypt melt: after replanting, some leaves may dissolve. Do not pull the plant! The roots live; new leaves adapted to your water return within weeks.
  • Patience pays: slow to start, then steady forever. An established patch needs almost zero maintenance.

FAQ

My crypt is melting after planting. Is it dying?
Almost certainly not. Crypt melt is the plant shedding old emersed-grown leaves while the roots establish. Leave it planted, keep feeding the roots, and new submerged leaves appear within a few weeks.

Will it carpet like Monte Carlo?
It forms a taller, looser hedge rather than a tight lawn: 3 to 5 inch rosettes that spread slowly by runners. Less mowing, more patience.

Does it need special substrate?
No. Plain gravel or sand plus root tabs works fine; nutrient-rich substrate just speeds it up.

How fast does it spread?
Expect a few new plantlets per season. Crypts reward keepers who plant them once and stop fiddling.
