Product description

DrTim's Aquatics One & Only Axolotl Live Nitrifying Bacteria is the axolotl-specific version of DrTim's classic bottled-bacteria starter — formulated to instantly cycle a new axolotl tank in 24 hours and to rescue an existing tank from ammonia or nitrite spikes. Real, pure-cultured Nitrosomonas and Nitrobacter bacteria — the same species that establish in a fully-cycled biofilter — bottled and ready to seed your filter the day the tank goes wet. Browse water additives & supplements or shop all freshwater supplies.

Add fish (or axolotls) on day one. Real Nitrosomonas + Nitrobacter bacteria — no clones, no Bacillus, no smoke. Pour the bottle into a new tank, add your axolotl, and the biofilter is already there. 2 oz treats 36 gallons.

What It's For

Axolotls produce a lot of ammonia for their size, and they're sensitive to it — ammonia and nitrite burns will damage gills before you've finished googling "is this normal." Traditional fishless cycling takes 4–6 weeks of dosing ammonia and waiting. DrTim's One & Only short-circuits the wait: the bottle contains live, active nitrifying bacteria already in the species that colonize freshwater biofilters. Pour the recommended dose into the tank, add the axolotl, and the bacteria immediately start oxidizing ammonia → nitrite → nitrate. After 24 hours your filter is functionally cycled.

It's also the fastest fix for an established tank crashing on ammonia — after a filter change, a long power outage, or losing your bio-media. Dose it, and the biofilter recovers in hours instead of days.

Features

Instant Tank CyclingCycles a new axolotl tank in 24 hours — add the axolotl the same day.
Real Nitrifying SpeciesPure-cultured Nitrosomonas + Nitrobacter — the actual freshwater biofilter bacteria.
Axolotl-FormulatedOptimized for the cool-water, high-ammonia bioload axolotls produce.
Crash RecoveryRestarts a biofilter after filter changes, power outages, or med-induced die-offs.
2 oz / 60 mL BottleTreats up to 36 gallons (140 L) of new tank water.
Freshwater & RefrigeratedLive bacteria — keep cool, never freeze, use before expiry.

How to Use

Cycling a new tank: Fill the tank with dechlorinated water, get the filter running, and dose the entire 2 oz bottle (treats up to 36 gal — use 1 oz per 18 gal for smaller tanks). Shake the bottle well first; pour directly into the tank in front of the filter intake. Add your axolotl the same day. Test ammonia and nitrite at 24 and 72 hours — both should read 0 ppm.

After a filter change or crash: Dose 1 oz per 18 gallons of tank water immediately. The bacteria will recolonize the new media within 24 hours.

Storage: Refrigerate after opening (don't freeze). Live bacteria — do not dose if the bottle smells like spoiled milk or has been sitting hot in a shipping truck. Check the expiry date on the cap.

FAQ

Is this safe for axolotls?
Yes — that's exactly what it's formulated for. The bacteria are amphibian-safe and the formulation is specifically designed for axolotl tanks, which run cooler than tropical tanks and have higher ammonia loads.

What's the difference between this and regular One & Only?
The base nitrifying bacteria are the same species, but the axolotl version is dosed and formulated for cool-water amphibian setups. Either version cycles a tank, but if you keep axolotls, this is the formulation made for them.

Do I really need to add the axolotl the same day?
You can wait — but the bacteria need ammonia (from livestock waste) to survive long-term. If you cycle and then leave the tank empty for weeks, the bacteria population will starve down. Best practice: dose, dechlorinate, add the axolotl, and feed lightly for the first week while testing daily.

Can I use it in a tank treated with medication?
No. Antibacterial medications (especially methylene blue, antibiotics, copper) will kill the nitrifying bacteria. Finish the med course, do a water change, run carbon for 24 hours to remove residue, THEN dose One & Only.

Does it work with chloraminated tap water?
Only if you've already dechlorinated. Chloramine kills nitrifying bacteria. Always dose your tap water with a chlorine/chloramine-neutralizing conditioner BEFORE adding One & Only.
