Female Crowntail Betta (Betta splendens)
The Female Crowntail Betta (Betta splendens) is a stunning, hardy freshwater showpiece prized for the spiky, comb-like fin extensions that give the variety its name. Females are generally less aggressive than males and display the same vivid color palette in assorted patterns — reds, blues, purples, multicolors, and dragons — with each fish a one-of-a-kind. Beginner-friendly and peaceful to semi-aggressive, this fish is an excellent centerpiece for a planted nano tank.
Pair this betta with a quality betta-specific food, a stable nano heater, and explore more colors in our live freshwater fish collection.
Care Guide
Crowntail bettas thrive in warm, slow-moving water with plenty of cover. A heated, filtered tank with gentle flow, soft substrate, and live or silk plants will keep their long fins healthy and tear-free. Keep the lid secured — bettas are jumpers.
- Tank size: 5 gallons minimum; 10+ gallons preferred for long-term health and stable parameters.
- Temperature: 76–82°F. Use a reliable heater — bettas suffer in cold water.
- Water parameters: pH 6.5–7.5, GH 5–20 dGH, KH 3–5 dKH. Soft to moderately hard water is ideal.
- Filtration: Gentle filtration only. Sponge filters or baffled HOBs prevent fin damage from strong flow.
- Diet: Carnivorous. Feed a high-protein betta pellet or semi-floating pellet as a staple, supplemented with frozen bloodworms, brine shrimp, or daphnia 1–2 times per week.
- Décor: Provide hides, broad-leaf plants, and a resting spot near the surface. The Hikari Dark Rock Cave is a perfect betta hide.

Compatibility & Tank Mates
Female crowntail bettas are typically more peaceful than males, but every betta has its own personality. They can be kept singly, in a sorority of 5+ females (advanced keepers only, in a heavily planted 20+ gallon tank), or with calm, non-fin-nipping community fish.
Good tank mates include:
- Corydoras catfish (peaceful bottom dwellers)
- Otocinclus (peaceful algae eaters)
- Kuhli loaches
- Small, peaceful tetras (ember tetras, neon tetras)
- Nerite snails and other algae-eating snails
- Amano shrimp (cherry shrimp risk being eaten)
Avoid: Other bettas (males or females housed without proper sorority setup), fin-nippers (tiger barbs, serpae tetras), aggressive cichlids, or anything that looks similar enough to trigger a territorial response.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I keep two female bettas together?
Two is the worst number — one will bully the other. If you want a sorority, plan for a group of 5 or more in a heavily planted 20+ gallon tank with line-of-sight breaks, and be prepared to separate any individuals that don't get along.
What color will my female crowntail be?
This is an assorted listing — colors and patterns vary fish to fish. Each one is unique. Stop by the showroom to pick out the exact fish you want, or let us choose a healthy individual for you.
How big a tank do I really need?
5 gallons is the absolute minimum for a single betta. 10 gallons is much easier to keep stable and gives room for plants and a small community. The "betta cup" is a holding container — not a home.
Do female bettas flare and build bubble nests?
Yes. Females flare to establish dominance and some build small bubble nests. Both are normal, healthy behaviors.
Is local pickup the only option?
Yes — Squeaky's Aquatics livestock is local pickup only at our Georgia showroom. We do not ship live fish.
