Fritz Nitrate Test Kit
The Fritz Nitrate Test Kit is a liquid reagent test that measures nitrate (NO3-) in freshwater and saltwater aquariums. Nitrate is the end product of your tank's nitrogen cycle — low levels mean a healthy, biologically stable system, while high nitrate fuels nuisance algae, stresses fish and corals, and stunts plant and coral growth. Pair with the rest of our water testing kits and water care supplies.
Why This Test Kit
- Two-bottle titration — more accurate than test strips for the most-targeted reef and planted-tank ranges.
- Works in both freshwater and saltwater — one kit covers tropical communities, African cichlids, planted tanks, FOWLR, and reef systems.
- Diagnose algae and water-quality issues — nitrate creep is the most common cause of nuisance algae, cyano, and stressed livestock.
- Cycling confirmation — once nitrate starts climbing while ammonia and nitrite read zero, your nitrogen cycle is complete.
- Made in the USA by Fritz Aquatics, the same brand behind FritzZyme bacteria, Fritz Complete conditioner, and the rest of our Fritz lineup.
How to Use
- Rinse the included test tube with aquarium water, then fill to the marked line.
- Add the specified number of drops from Bottle #1, cap, and invert to mix.
- Shake Bottle #2 vigorously for the time listed on the instructions, then add the specified drops and invert again.
- Wait the listed development time, then compare against the printed color chart in natural daylight or a neutral white light.
- Record the result in your tank log and adjust water-change schedule, feeding, or nitrate-reducing media as needed.

FAQ
What's a "safe" nitrate level?
It depends on the system. Freshwater communities are usually fine under 20–40 ppm. Planted tanks tolerate higher levels because plants consume nitrate. Reef tanks are the strictest — most aim for 1–10 ppm; SPS-dominant systems target the low end.
Can I use this in a new tank that's still cycling?
Yes — watching nitrate rise from zero is how you confirm your cycle is finishing. Pair with ammonia and nitrite tests until all three settle into their target ranges.
How often should I test?
Weekly for established tanks, or anytime livestock acts off, you see new algae growth, or you change a maintenance routine. Test before and after big water changes to dial in your schedule.
Liquid test vs. test strips — which should I buy?
Liquid titration is more accurate at the low ranges that matter for reef and planted tanks. Strips are faster for quick checks of established freshwater systems. Most hobbyists keep both.
