Fritz Nitrite Test Kit

Why Test Nitrite

Fritz explains that nitrite forms from the breakdown of organic waste, including uneaten food, fish waste and decaying plant matter, and is produced during the nitrogen cycle. It is less harmful than ammonia but can still cause stress, respiratory distress and death in fish and other aquatic life, so elevated levels need to be addressed quickly.

Nitrite is the middle step of the nitrogen cycle. Rising levels show a new tank's cycle is progressing, and falling levels signal it is nearing completion. In an established tank, rising nitrite can be a sign the biological filter can't keep up.

How to Test

1. Fill the test tube to the 5 mL line with aquarium water.
2. Add 5 drops of test solution, holding the bottle upside down and completely vertical.
3. Cap the tube and shake to mix.
4. Wait five minutes for the color to develop, then match it against the color chart.

Rinse the tube with clean water after each use, keep test solutions out of the aquarium, and follow the full instructions in the box.

Reading Your Results

In an established aquarium, nitrite should ideally read 0 ppm. Fritz calls for immediate action above 0.5 ppm in most freshwater aquariums and above 0.1 ppm in most saltwater aquariums. Fritz recommends:

• Reduce feeding temporarily if any nitrite is detected.
• If nitrite is above 0.5 ppm, do a 25% water change and treat the replacement water with Fritz Guard water conditioner.
• Add Fritz nitrifying bacteria, such as FritzZyme 7 Freshwater or FritzZyme 9 Saltwater, to reduce ammonia and nitrite.
