Longfin Gold Zebra Danio (Danio rerio)
The Longfin Gold Zebra Danio (Danio rerio) is a hardy, endlessly active schooling fish with a warm golden body and long, flowing fins that trail behind it as it zips around the tank. It is one of the easiest community fish in the hobby, an ideal first fish for new hobbyists and a lively splash of movement for any planted freshwater aquarium. Care level: Beginner. Temperament: Peaceful.
Care Guide
Gold Zebra Danios are about as forgiving as freshwater fish get, shrugging off a wide range of temperatures and water conditions that would stress more delicate species. They shine in a group with plenty of open swimming room.
- Keep them in a group: Danios are true schooling fish. Keep six or more so they feel secure, school tightly, and stay out in the open instead of hiding.
- Swimming space: Long tanks with open water suit their high-energy, top-to-middle swimming. A secure lid is a must, as they are accomplished jumpers.
- Water quality: Very adaptable, but stable, clean water keeps their color and finnage at their best. Weekly water changes and a gentle to moderate flow are ideal.
- Diet: Omnivore. Feed a quality staple flake such as Xtreme Community Crave Flakes, rotating in frozen or freeze-dried brine shrimp and daphnia for color and condition.

Compatibility
Peaceful and community-safe. Gold Zebra Danios pair well with other active, peaceful schoolers and most small community fish. Good tankmates include the Micro Tiger Rasbora, Celestial Pearl Danio, Ember Tetra, peaceful corydoras catfish, and nerite snails. Avoid fin-nipping species such as tiger barbs, which will shred their long fins, and steer clear of large or aggressive cichlids that may treat them as food.

Frequently Asked Questions
How many Gold Zebra Danios should I keep together?
At least six. They are schooling fish, and a larger group looks better and behaves more naturally, with far less nipping among themselves.
Do they need a heater?
They tolerate cooler water than most tropicals, but a stable temperature in the low to mid 70s F keeps them comfortable and active year round. A heater is recommended for most home aquariums.
Will they nip my other fish?
Kept in a proper school they are peaceful. Under-stocked danios (just one or two) can get nippy out of boredom, so always keep a group.
Are the long fins delicate?
The flowing finnage is hardy but can be torn by fin-nippers or sharp decor. House them with peaceful tankmates and smooth plants or driftwood.
