Midas Blenny (Ecsenius midas)
The Midas Blenny (Ecsenius midas) is one of the most personable fish in the saltwater hobby. A brilliant golden-yellow body, big expressive eyes, and an unusual swimming style (slow eel-like undulation through open water instead of darting between rocks like most blennies) make it a charismatic centerpiece for any reef tank. In the wild it shadows schools of Lyretail Anthias for protection and adopts the same coloration. Pair with our other saltwater fish in a 30+ gallon reef.
Reef-safe, easy to feed, and full of attitude. The Midas often peeks out of a rockwork hole, watches you intently from a perch, and comes to the front glass at feeding time.
Care Guide
- Tank size: 30 gallons minimum, 55+ preferred. They are mid-water swimmers and use the full water column.
- Rockwork: Provide several caves and overhangs. The Midas claims one as a sleeping hole and returns to it nightly.
- Diet: Omnivore leaning herbivore. Quality marine pellets, frozen mysis and brine, and most importantly a regular nori sheet or seaweed clip. They also graze film algae and pick at copepods.
- Feeding frequency: Twice daily. They are eager eaters and will out-compete shyer tank mates.
- Reef safe: Yes with all corals, clams, and motile inverts. Some individuals occasionally pick at the mucus of certain large polyp stony corals; well-fed Midas Blennies rarely cause trouble.
- Temperament: Peaceful with other species. Can be territorial with other blennies, gobies that share the same rockwork hole, or another Midas. One per tank unless very large.
- Lid: Tight-fitting. Midas Blennies are accomplished jumpers, especially when startled.
- Acclimation: Slow drip 45 to 60 minutes. They settle in quickly and start eating within a day.

Tank Mates & Compatibility
Excellent reef companion. Pairs well with most clownfish, tangs, wrasses, anthias (especially Lyretails — its natural model species), cardinals, and small gobies that hold a different rockwork zone. Avoid other blennies (Lawnmower, Tail-Spot, Bicolor), large dottybacks, and overly aggressive damsels.
Reef-safe with hard and soft corals, clams, snails, hermits, and adult cleaner shrimp. One Midas per tank in anything under 100 gallons.
Recommended Foods & Supplies
- Rod's Three Weed Blend — varied seaweed clip is the cornerstone of Midas Blenny diet.
- BRS Premium Saltwater Pellets — daily protein staple.
- SFBB Freeze-Dried Mysis — easy frozen meal a few times a week.
- Brightwell AngeLixir — amino-acid soak to keep that golden color saturated.
- Salt mixes — keep parameters rock-solid with a quality synthetic salt.
FAQ
Will it really stay this yellow?
Yes, in a healthy tank with a varied diet (including nori) the Midas keeps its rich gold color for life. Color fade usually points to nutrition gaps or stress.
I heard blennies pick at corals — should I worry?
The reputation comes mostly from Lawnmower and Sailfin Blennies. Midas Blennies are far less likely to nip corals. Keep them well-fed with daily nori and they ignore the reef.
Can I keep two?
Only in very large systems (100+ gallons) with clearly separated rockwork zones. Even then, expect occasional posturing. One Midas per tank is the safe rule.
Why does it swim like an eel?
The Midas evolved to mimic Lyretail Anthias by hovering and undulating in open water. In captivity it keeps that unusual mid-water swimming style and gives the tank constant motion.
