Care Guide

Fancy goldfish are coldwater fish and do best between 65 and 75°F, so they rarely need a heater. They are big eaters with a heavy waste load, which means strong filtration and regular water changes are the keys to keeping them healthy. Plan on at least 20 gallons for your first fancy goldfish and roughly 10 more gallons for each additional fish. They are not suited to bowls or tiny tanks.

Round-bodied fancy goldfish can be prone to buoyancy and swim-bladder trouble, so feed a quality sinking goldfish food and pre-soak floating foods so they sink. Round out the diet with blanched vegetables like peas and spinach. Give them smooth decor and rounded gravel, since their delicate eyes and trailing fins are easy to scratch on sharp ornaments.

Compatibility

Fancy goldfish are gentle, slow swimmers and do best with their own kind. House them with other round-bodied fancy goldfish of similar size so no one gets out-competed at feeding time. Avoid fast single-tail goldfish like comets and commons, which will outpace and outgrow them, and skip tropical community fish, which need warmer water. They are not nippy, but their flowing fins can tempt fin-nippers, so choose tankmates carefully.
