Product description

In-store pickup only. Your order is reserved, we hold off on bagging until you arrive so it stays healthy in its display tank.

The Nearly Naked Clownfish (Amphiprion ocellaris) is a captive bred designer morph that trades the classic three white bars for a rich, saturated orange body with jet black fins and just a trace of leftover white, usually a small dot or sliver near the head. No two are marked quite the same, so the fish you pick out is genuinely one of a kind. Under the designer coat it is still the same hardy, peaceful, beginner friendly Ocellaris that anchors the saltwater hobby: reef safe, easy to feed, and perfectly content with or without an anemone. Care Guide

  • Tank size: 10 gallons or larger for a single fish, 20 gallons or larger for a pair. One of the best nano-friendly saltwater fish.
  • Water parameters: 72 to 78°F, pH 8.1 to 8.4, salinity 1.020 to 1.026. Stability matters more than chasing exact numbers.
  • Feeding: omnivore and an eager eater. Rotate meaty frozen foods like PE Mysis with a quality staple such as Xtreme Marine PeeWee pellets or Vitalis Marine Grazing Pellets, once or twice daily.
  • Anemone optional: it does not need one to thrive. Given the chance, many will adopt a bubble tip anemone, though a favorite rock or coral works just as well as home base.
  • Captive bred: raised in aquariums for generations, so it arrives already adapted to prepared foods and tank life.
  • Behavior: claims a small home territory and wiggle-swims in place rather than cruising, which keeps it front and center in the display.

Compatibility

A model citizen for peaceful community and reef tanks. Keep one, or add two juveniles and let them pair off, with the larger fish becoming the female. Avoid mixing different clownfish varieties in average sized tanks, since an established pair defends its territory against lookalikes. Excellent tank mates include the Royal Gramma, Firefish Goby, Blue Green Chromis, Banggai Cardinalfish, and cleanup crew inverts like the Scarlet Skunk Cleaner Shrimp. Weighing your clownfish options? Compare it with our classic Ocellaris, Black Ocellaris, Wyoming White, and Black Ice Longfin.

FAQ

Why is it called Nearly Naked?
"Naked" clownfish are a designer line bred to carry no white bars at all. Nearly Naked fish keep a small remnant, often a dot or sliver behind the head, so every fish wears its own signature mark.

Does it need an anemone?
No. Clownfish do great without one, and captive bred fish can take a while to notice an anemone anyway. If you add a bubble tip later, there is a good chance it moves right in.

Can I keep it with my other clownfish?
One clownfish or one bonded pair per tank is the safe rule. An established pair will bully newcomer clownfish, even a different color morph of the same species.

Is it harder to keep than a regular Ocellaris?
Not at all. Only the pattern changed. Care, hardiness, and temperament are identical to the classic Ocellaris, one of the easiest saltwater fish in the hobby.
