Product description

PolypLab Genesis Rock is biological filter media in the shape of a rock: a 4 x 4 x 1 inch block of 100% fired ceramic with more than 23,000 square feet of bacterial surface area per rock. Drop one in the sump and you add a huge, stable home for the nitrifying and denitrifying bacteria that keep ammonia, nitrite, nitrate and phosphate in check. This 2 pack covers up to 700 gallons and works in saltwater, reef and freshwater systems. Seed it with Genesis Bacterial Blend, or grab the 4 pack for larger systems, and browse the rest of our filter media.

Why Genesis Rock

  • Massive surface area: each rock adds 23,000 square feet or more of colonizable surface, far beyond what live rock or plastic media of the same footprint can offer.
  • Rated to 350 gallons per rock: the 2 pack supports systems up to 700 gallons, so even a large reef only needs a couple of blocks.
  • 100% fired ceramic, zero leach: fired at over 600 degrees so nothing leaches into the water and the block stays inert for the life of the tank.
  • Works three ways: place it for aerobic, anaerobic or mixed filtration depending on which nutrient you want to target.
  • Lowers phosphate and organics: a larger bacterial population consumes more dissolved organics and binds more phosphate, taking pressure off your skimmer and media reactor.
  • Compact and stackable: the flat 4 x 4 x 1 inch blocks sit in a sump chamber, a media basket or a refugium without rearranging plumbing.

How to Use

  1. Rinse the rocks well with RO/DI or other purified water before use.
  2. For a faster start, soak them for 12 hours or more in a bacterial supplement such as Genesis Bacterial Blend.
  3. Choose a placement: aerobic (above the water line with a gentle trickle of about 40 GPH over the rock) for ammonia and nitrite removal; anaerobic (a low-flow sump area) for nitrate reduction; or medium flow for a balance of both.
  4. Give the bacteria a few weeks to colonize, then watch your nutrient tests trend down.

FAQ

How many rocks do I need? PolypLab rates each rock for up to 350 gallons, so the 2 pack handles most home systems. Heavily stocked tanks or systems fighting nitrate benefit from more rocks in a low-flow spot.

Do I have to cure or soak it first? No curing. Rinse it with purified water and place it. A 12 hour soak in a bacterial supplement is optional but speeds up colonization.

Does it work in freshwater? Yes. PolypLab designs Genesis Rock for fresh or saltwater systems; the bacteria that colonize it are the same ones that run any aquarium's nitrogen cycle.

Will it change my water chemistry? No. The block is fully fired ceramic with zero-leach technology, so it does not add phosphate, silicate or anything else to the water.
