The Red Cap Oranda Goldfish (Carassius auratus) is one of the most recognizable and beloved fancy goldfish — pearl-white body topped with a striking red "wen" (hood) on the head. Peaceful, slow-moving, and beginner-friendly, this cool-water classic is ideal for goldfish-only setups, single-species display tanks, and pond seasonals brought indoors. Browse all our freshwater fish or see the full Mixed Oranda assortment for color variety.

Care Guide

  • Tank size: 30 gallons minimum for one Oranda; add 10–15 gallons per additional fish. Long, low-profile tanks beat tall ones — fancy goldfish swim horizontally and need room to turn.
  • Temperature: 65–72°F. Orandas are cool-water fish — no heater needed in most homes. Avoid pairing with tropical species that demand 76°F+.
  • Filtration: Oversize it. Goldfish are heavy waste producers; target a filter rated for 2× your tank volume. A canister filter or HOB plus a sponge filter is ideal.
  • Water changes: 25–30% weekly. Use a quality dechlorinator like Seachem Prime on every refill.
  • Diet: Omnivore — feed a high-quality sinking goldfish pellet as a staple. Sinking food is critical for fancy goldfish: their deep bodies and weak swim bladders make floating food a buoyancy hazard. Supplement with blanched veggies (peas, zucchini) once or twice a week.
  • Substrate & decor: Bare-bottom or smooth river stone. Skip sharp gravel and sharp rockwork — Orandas bump into things and can tear the wen.

Compatibility

House Orandas with other fancy goldfish only. Their slow swimming and limited vision (the wen can partially block their eyes as it grows) means they get outcompeted at feeding time and stressed by fast tankmates.

  • Good tank mates: Other fancy goldfish — Ranchu, Telescope, Black Moor, Ryukin, Pearlscale, other Orandas.
  • Avoid: Common goldfish and koi (grow much larger, swim much faster), tropical community fish (temperature mismatch), fin-nippers (tetras, barbs), and any aggressive cichlids.
  • Inverts: Most snails and shrimp will be eaten — Orandas treat small inverts as food.

FAQ

Do I need a heater for an Oranda?
Usually no. Orandas thrive at 65–72°F, the range most heated homes naturally sit in. A heater is only useful if your room drops below ~60°F for extended periods, or to stabilize an unheated basement tank in winter.

How big will the "wen" (red cap) grow?
The wen develops over the first 1–2 years and continues thickening for 3+ years. Good water quality and a varied diet rich in protein and color enhancers help it develop fully. A heavy wen can partially obscure vision, so keep decor smooth and feeding-spots predictable.

Can I keep an Oranda in a fancy goldfish bowl?
No. Bowls are unfiltered and far too small. A single Oranda needs 30 gallons of well-filtered, well-oxygenated water to thrive long-term.

What size is the fish you ship?
We're local pickup only — sizes vary by current stock. Most Red Cap Orandas in our display tank are 2–3 inches (juvenile to sub-adult). Stop by the store or call ahead for current sizing.
