Seachem MultiTest Reef Special
Seachem MultiTest Reef Special is a three in one reef test kit that tracks phosphate, silicate, and iodide, the trace parameters that quietly shape how a reef tank looks and grows. With 75 tests in the box, it helps you stay ahead of nuisance algae and keep the trace elements your corals rely on in a healthy range. It fits right in with the rest of our water testing gear and saltwater supplies.
What It Tests
- Phosphate. The main fuel for hair algae and cyano. Reef keepers hold it very low, and even a small rise can slow coral calcification and trigger an algae outbreak, so catching it early matters.
- Silicate. The hidden driver behind brown diatom films on glass and sand. It often sneaks in through tap or source water, and testing tells you whether your water source or media is the problem.
- Iodide. A trace element that corals, shrimp, and other invertebrates draw on. It gets used up over time, and testing takes the guesswork out of whether and how much to replenish.
Why Test All Three
Phosphate and silicate are the two parameters most often behind an ugly tank, while iodide is one of the trace elements most worth watching if you dose. Bundling them into one kit means you can run a quick nuisance-and-trace panel whenever algae creeps in or your corals look off, instead of buying three separate kits.

FAQ
What phosphate level should a reef run?
Most reef keepers aim for a very low but not zero phosphate, since corals still need a trace. If your test climbs, run a remover and check your feeding and source water.
Why would I test silicate?
Persistent brown diatom films usually mean silicate is entering the tank, most often through unfiltered tap water. Testing pinpoints the source so you can fix it at the water, not just wipe the glass.
Do I have to dose iodide?
Not necessarily. Test first. If your iodide reads low and you keep corals or shrimp that use it, a measured dose helps. If it is fine, leave it alone.
Can I use this in a freshwater tank?
This kit is designed for saltwater and reef aquariums. For freshwater testing, we carry other kits better suited to that water.
