Seachem Neutral Regulator
Seachem Neutral Regulator is a phosphate-based buffer that sets and holds your aquarium at a neutral pH of 7.0, whether your water starts out too high or too low. As it buffers, it also softens water by precipitating calcium and magnesium and removes chlorine, chloramine, and ammonia from tap water, so it doubles as a conditioner on water change day. It is a great choice for community fish and species like discus that prefer soft, neutral water. Keep an eye on your parameters with a pH test kit and browse more water care and treatments.
What It Does
- Sets and holds pH at a neutral 7.0 from either a high or low starting point
- Softens water by precipitating calcium and magnesium
- Removes chlorine and chloramine and detoxifies the ammonia they release
- Ideal for community tanks and soft-water species such as discus
- Works on contact and can be added to the tank or to replacement water
How to Dose
Use 5 g (about 1 level teaspoon) for every 40 to 80 L (10 to 20 US gallons) once or twice a month to maintain a neutral pH. If your water has very high alkalinity, you can dose daily until the target pH is reached. Add it directly to the aquarium or dissolve it in your replacement water during a change.
| Goal | Guideline |
|---|---|
| Maintain pH 7.0 | 5 g (1 tsp) per 10 to 20 gallons, once or twice a month |
| Bring down high alkalinity | Dose daily until the target pH holds |
Make pH changes gradually so your fish can adjust, and always match the water to the animals you keep.
Choose Your Size
Neutral Regulator is available in several sizes, from a small container for occasional adjustments up to a 1 kg tub for frequent use and busy fishrooms. Pick the size that matches how often you dose and how many tanks you maintain.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is it safe for planted tanks?
Neutral Regulator is phosphate-based, so it is not the best choice for planted aquariums where the added phosphate can encourage algae. For a planted setup, a phosphate-free buffer is a better match.
Will it work for African cichlids or a marine tank?
No. Those systems need a higher pH. Neutral Regulator targets 7.0, which suits community and soft-water freshwater fish. Use Alkaline Regulator or a cichlid buffer for high-pH tanks.
Does it also remove chlorine?
Yes. It removes chlorine and chloramine and detoxifies ammonia, so it conditions tap water while it buffers.
How often should I dose?
About once or twice a month for maintenance, or daily in high-alkalinity water until the pH settles at 7.0. Adjust gradually to avoid stressing your fish.
