Seachem Safe
Seachem Safe is the concentrated dry form of Seachem's popular Prime conditioner. It instantly removes chlorine and chloramine from tap water and detoxifies ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate, making it a complete conditioner for water changes and new tank setups. Because it is a powder concentrate, a tiny amount treats hundreds of gallons, so it is by far the most economical way to condition water. Safe works in both freshwater and saltwater, will not affect pH, and will not over-activate protein skimmers. Explore more water care and treatments to round out your maintenance kit.
Why Choose Safe
- Removes chlorine and chloramine from municipal tap water
- Detoxifies ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate
- Ultra-concentrated powder: a small measure treats hundreds of gallons
- Safe for freshwater and saltwater aquariums
- Does not affect pH and will not over-activate protein skimmers
- Compact, long shelf life, and far more economical than liquid conditioners
How to Dose
When possible, add Safe to the new water before a water change, though it can also be added directly to the aquarium.
| Purpose | Dose | Treats |
|---|---|---|
| Remove chlorine and chloramine | 1/4 level teaspoon (1.25 g) | Up to 300 US gallons |
| Detoxify ammonia | 1/4 level teaspoon (1.25 g) | Up to 75 US gallons |
The 1.8 oz (50 g) size includes a small measuring scoop for accurate low-volume dosing. For the 250 g and 1 kg sizes, a 1/4 teaspoon or a small digital scale works well. For exceptionally high chloramine, a double dose is safe. For an emergency, up to four times the normal dose may be used to detoxify nitrite or nitrate. Use a half dose above 86°F when chlorine and ammonia levels are low.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is Safe the same as Prime?
Yes. Safe is the dry, powdered concentrate of Prime. It provides the same chlorine, chloramine, and ammonia protection, just in an even more concentrated and economical form.
How little do I really use?
Very little. About a 1/4 teaspoon treats up to 300 gallons when removing chlorine, which is why a single container lasts a long time.
Will it work in a reef or saltwater tank?
Yes. Safe is reef and marine safe, does not affect pH, and will not over-activate your protein skimmer.
Does the powder expire?
As a dry concentrate it has a long shelf life. Keep the container sealed and dry between uses.
