Product description

The ZooMed Betta Mopani Wood is a small, hand-picked piece of natural African Mopani driftwood — perfectly sized for betta tanks, nano aquariums, and small planted setups. Mopani's distinctive two-toned look (dark hardwood next to light sapwood) gives any tank a wild, natural feel, and it gently releases tannins that bettas love — softening water, lowering pH slightly, and creating the tea-colored "blackwater" environment they evolved in. Why Betta Keepers Love Mopani

  • Tannin release — natural humic acids soften water, lower pH slightly, and bring out richer betta colors.
  • Two-toned beauty — dramatic light/dark color contrast in every piece.
  • Dense & long-lasting — one of the hardest aquarium woods; doesn't break down or rot quickly.
  • Anchor for plants — Anubias, Java Fern, and mosses tie beautifully to the rough surface.
  • Hiding spot — gives shy bettas a natural place to rest and explore.
  • Pre-sized for nano tanks — small piece fits 2.5–10 gallon betta setups without crowding.

How to Prep Your Mopani Wood

Mopani is dense and floats at first — so it needs a soak before going into your display tank. Submerge it in a bucket of clean water for 1–2 weeks, changing the water every couple of days. This both waterlogs the wood (so it sinks) and rinses out the initial heavy tannin release. If you don't mind tea-colored water, you can skip the soak and let the wood saturate inside the tank over a few weeks.

For extra-fast prep, boil the wood for 1–2 hours before soaking — this kills any hitchhiking organisms and accelerates tannin release. Brown water in your tank is harmless and actually beneficial for bettas; if you want crystal-clear water, run activated carbon for a few weeks.

FAQ

Will it tint my water brown?
Yes, especially during the first few weeks. The amber/tea color is from tannins — completely safe and actually beneficial for bettas and other South American/blackwater fish. If you want clearer water, soak the wood longer before installing, do more frequent water changes, or run activated carbon.

Do I really need to soak it?
Yes if you want it to sink. Fresh Mopani is buoyant and will float for weeks otherwise. Soaking for 1–2 weeks (or boiling 1–2 hours) waterlogs the wood and reduces initial tannin release.

Will my fish or shrimp eat it?
Most fish ignore it; plecos and some catfish will rasp at the surface, which is normal and provides fiber to their diet. Bettas don't graze on it.

Can I attach plants to it?
Absolutely — Anubias, Java Fern, and mosses are perfect candidates. Tie them on with cotton thread or fishing line; they'll root themselves within a few weeks.

How is this different from regular driftwood?
Mopani is denser and harder than most aquarium woods, with stronger color contrast and a longer in-tank lifespan. It releases tannins more slowly than soft woods like Malaysian driftwood, making it ideal for long-term betta setups.
